Q&A Weekend: - Brad Holt

Jack Flynn asked:.

Holt was 3-14 with an 8.34 ERA this season!? That is impressively bad. Mack, is it time to admit that this guy's professional future - if he has any - is as a reliever?

And that followed a 2009 where he went 7-7, 4.88.

Look Jack, I'm not going to give you a bunch of sabermetrics stuff and tell you his FIP sucks more than his BABIP. What I will tell you is Holt has been an organizational failure for well over two years. Countless coaches, especially Rick Waits, have spent eons of hours with him, trying to develop decent enough secondary pitchers to go with his fast ball (which touched 96 the day before he was drafted and probably hasn't seen this number since).

This past year has really gone to shit. His velocity has been erratic at best and his control was sometimes non-existent. The BAA in Binghamton was friggin .336.

I've also heard that there has been a little bit of attitude problems that have developed which is understandable. You just can't keep missing the barn and not kick it some day.

I was kind of surprised that he got himself an Arizona slot. My only explanation, until the league starts, is he will be converted to a reliever. Inside surces tell me that his current velocity barely warrants the conversion.

No, Holt can't balme this on injuries or a surgery. This simply looks like a bad draft pick by Rudy Terrasas.
