B-Mets Silence Thunder, 7-3
BINGHAMTON, NY – Cory Mazzoni struck out 10 batters and the offense provided five unanswered runs behind him as the Binghamton Mets defeated the Trenton Thunder, 7-3 Friday night at NYSEG Stadium.
Mazzoni struck out the side in the top of the first and the offense kept up the momentum in the bottom half. Danny Muno led off with a walk against Zach Nuding, and Josh Rodriguez followed with a double into the left-centerfield gap. Two batters later, Nuding uncorked a wild pitch allowing Muno to score for the first run of the game. The wild pitch occurred with Allan Dykstra batting, and he then made it 2-0 Binghamton with an RBI groundout to second base.
The lone rough patch for Mazzoni came in the top of the second inning. After two consecutive singles to start the inning, Reegie Corona put Trenton on the board with a single. The next batter was Joe Pirela, and he gave Trenton a 3-2 advantage with a hard-hit single right back up the middle. In the frame, Mazzoni allowed three runs and four hits.
Blake Forsythe got the offense going again in the bottom of the second. He hit a ball off the right-centerfield wall for a triple, and came home on an RBI groundout by Wilfredo Tovar to tie the game, 3-3.
The B-Mets took the lead for good in the bottom of the third. After Cesar Puello singled with one out, Travis Taijeron hooked a two-run home run past the left field foul pole to put Binghamton on top, 5-3.
The two-run cushion was plenty for Mazzoni. The righty only allowed one base hit over his final four innings of work, and finished the night with 10 strikeouts in six innings. He handed the ball off to Chase Huchingson, who worked himself into trouble in the seventh. After retiring the first two batters of the inning, Chase walked a man, allowed a single, and hit Slade Heathcott to load the bases. Tyler Austin flied out to centerfield on a full count pitch however to end the threat as Huchingson posted a scoreless seventh.
Adam Kolarek was next out of the bullpen, and he started his outing with a 1-2-3 eighth inning. In the bottom half, the B-Met offense provided their final insurance. Forsythe scored on a Darrell Ceciliani single, and Rodriguez capped the scoring with an RBI single to give Binghamton a 7-3 lead. Kolarek stayed in the game for the ninth, and retired the Thunder in order to finish the game.
Mazzoni (4-2) picked up the win, and has now struck out 21 Thunder batters in his last two starts against them. Nuding (2-9) was given the loss after allowing five runs in five innings on the mound. Kolarek was awarded his first Double-A save, as he retired all six batters that he faced.
The B-Mets (48-28) and Thunder (40-38) continue their series at NYSEG Stadium with a doubleheader on Saturday. The first game starts at 5:05 PMas Binghamton sends RHP Logan Verrett to the hill against RHP Shane Greene for Trenton. In the nightcap, LHP Mark Cohoon will throw for Binghamton against RHP Mikey O’Brien. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show starts at 4:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
POSTGAME NOTES: Binghamton is 20 games over .500 for the first time since August 14, 2004 (70-50)…The B-Mets are now 34-3 when outhitting their opponent…The B-Mets are now on a four-game winning streak
