Soto - Post Draft MM's Top 25 - #25 CF Ivan Wilson

Now that the draft is over, Mack's Mets will be reviewing the performances of our organizational Top 25 prospects and re-ranking them based on their individual performances, perceived place on the depth chart, and recent draft signings.

We reviewed guys who just missed the cut yesterday. Click here for that story.

Mack's Mets #25 organizational prospect is......

#25 CF Ivan Wilson
Bats: R  Throws: R
Height: 6' 3" Weight: 200 lb
Acquired: 2013 Rule 4 Draft, 3rd round, Ruston High School (Louisiana)

2013: (R) .333/.500/.333, 0 HR, 0 RBI, 2 SB (100%), 2 BB, 1 K

Paul DePodesta found a third round gem in this kid. At 18 years of age, Wilson has all the makings of a high ceiling, high bust type prospect. He has an extremely athletic frame and played wide receiver for his football in high school as well. Wilson has good speed, a strong arm, and natural raw power. His swing is nice and smooth and actually contains excellent hip rotation, a bit too much actually, but his current hand set-up robs him of power in games and keeps his swing relatively flat. If the coaches can get him comfortable with a new hand position we may have ourselves a really nice prospect here.

Scouting high school players is interesting.

Pitching is one thing.

In the case of every day players, you look for athletics and speed, with the bat, legs, and arm.

You can teach how to hold a bat and how to swing it, but you can't make a slow person fast, a dumb person smart, a wie-ass a team player, or a klutz an athlete.

The Mets may have a chance with this one. We'll re-visit it in 2015.
