St. Lucie 6 - Clearwater 2

The St. Lucie Mets matched their season high five-game winning streak by pulling away from the Clearwater Threshers for a 6-2 victory on Friday at Tradition Field.

The Mets only trailed for two innings in their four-game sweep of the Threshers, who are a Minor League Baseball worst 9-36.

Dilson Herrera and Brandon Nimmo led the way for St. Lucie. The top two in the order had two hits apiece and both scored twice.

Matt Koch improved to 6-0 and won his fifth straight start. The right handed from Louisville cruised through the first five innings before giving up a couple of runs in the sixth. He went six innings and gave up two runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out one.

The Mets struck early in the first. Herrera led off with a walk issued by Jeb Stefan. Nimmo followed with an RBI double to left to put the Mets up 1-0. After T.J. Rivera grounded out to move Nimmo to third, Jairo Perez lifted a sac fly to center and the Mets led 2-0.

Rivera launched a double in the the third that plated Herrera for a 3-0 lead. It was Rivera’s Florida State League leading 41st RBI of the season.

The Threshers answered in the sixth, but a major mistake cost them a shot at tying the game or taking the lead. KC Serna doubled home Angelo Mora to put Clearwater on the board. After a bunt single, Chris Swauger grounded into a double play to force home a run against Koch and make it 3-2.

Art Charles singled with two outs and Logan Moore doubled to left field to put runners at second and third. However, Mets manager Ryan Ellis reviewed his lineup card with home plate umpire David Arrieta and both had Moore batting out of turn. Andrew Knapp was supposed to be batting in the sixth spot instead of Moore, who had just doubled. Arrieta called Moore out at second base and the rally ended.

Phillip Evans broke the game open with a two-run double in the eighth for the final margin of 6-2.

Seth Lugo pitched the final three innings for the Mets without issue. He retired nine of the 10 batters he faced, including the side in the ninth to end the game and earn his third save.

The Mets (29-19) have won seven of eight and are a season high 10 games over .500.  - team press release
