Here at Macks Mets, we'd like to start spotlighting individual Mets minor league players who are excelling.
Lefty reliever Andrew Mitchell is certainly one.
Mitchell was a 14th round selection as a 22 year old in the 2018 draft. At the time, the 6'1", 200 southpaw reached the low 90s and was reported to have a good curve.
His college ERA and walks per inning were unimpressive.
What he has done as a reliever in the pros, though, has been quite impressive. How does 60 Ks in 40 pro innings sound? How about 4 saves and a career ERA hovering close to 1.00?
For Columbia in 2019, he had a 1-0 record, and 2 of 2 in saves, in 13 outings, with a 1.06 ERA and WHIP, and 28 Ks and just 5 walks in 17 innings. Hot dog, that's good pitching! Hey, and his last 3 outings? 4.2 IP, no hits, no walks, 8 Ks.

On Monday night, a reeling Fireflies team was trying to hold a 2-1 lead, and Mitchell faced 5 batters, retired all of them, and fanned 4. Now that's what I call RELIEF!
So, kudos from Macks Mets to a fella that made college pitching look hard, but pro ball (so far) look mighty easy.
Another month of this and he could be up for a promo to St Lucie.

The Mets went up against an 0-6 pitcher with one of their BIG 3, Zack Wheeler. Wheeler pitched lousy, and despite the 0-6 dude coming out of the game hurt real early, they could not win against a weak bullpen. They lost 2 key offensive players, McNeil and Conforto, to injury.
And despite this writer pleading for several weeks for the DFA of Keon Broxton, he struck out with the tying and go-ahead runs on base to end the game.
Was anyone surprised he struck out? Anyone?
I guess the Wilpons were.
Games like this put a season in jeopardy...fast.

Right now I have him as our 22nd prospect.
At his age, and the fact that he has 14 appearances under his belt this year for A-Columbia, I do see him moving to A+ St. Lucie around the all-start break
St Lucie is often the split in the road between guys who will excel at higher levels or not. Mr. Mitchell seems like he is on the former road, the one that eventually leads to Queens.
Gilliam, Villines and Kay need to get to Queens ASAP. Too bad there are no offensive studs to join them.
Another gut punch game as we're going nowhere if keep losing these kind of games and if Wheeler has such terrible stats against the Nat why not push him to Fri against the Fish is that crazy or not? Tom as Yogi once said: when you come to a fork in the road take it....hopefully for us they take the right one and Gomez is finally coming up....go Carlos!
