Tony Plate - Callaway's Job Is Safe

"SAFE AT THE "PLATE!" - with Tony Plate

The New York Mets General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen is sticking with Manager Mickey Callaway whose job is safe for now. The Mets were on a five-game losing streak including a sweep by the last place Florida Marlins this past weekend which brought up a heated debate for Callaway’s dismissal.

The Mets ended the losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Washington Nationals last night. The general manager arrived at the Mets press conference room twenty minutes late to address the media, because he called a meeting with the entire staff to make it clear that Callaway has the full support of management to lead the team for the foreseeable future.

When he addressed the media his message to all Met fans was that Callaway isn’t going anywhere and the team is going to provide the same support for him as they did during the off-season.

In my opinion, the Mets are making the right decision. It is only May and it is early in the season and I think Callaway deserves a chance to guide the Mets to a much better record.

During the off-season Van Wagenen believed that the Mets were going to have a contending team and be the favorites to win the National League Eastern Division Title. He did not have any regrets for that thinking. He also believes that the Mets still have the chance to get back in contention this year.

He maybe has that mindset, because when the rest of the starting rotation becomes healthy again along with the rest of the offense doing their share, perhaps the Mets will be contenders the rest of the way. Since it is early there is no need for Met fans to panic at the current time. Van Wagenen can also improve the team by signing free agent pitchers Dallas Keuchel and Craig Kimbrel who are still available.

If the Mets are interested, they are better off waiting until after the June 5th Major League Baseball Draft to sign Kimbrel or Keuchel, because if they try to sign them before the draft, they will be forced to surrender a draft pick in the process. The pick that would have to be given up by each team is determined by the amount the player signs for or if the team received revenue sharing.

In other Mets news, Yoenis Cespedes who has been out since last July after undergoing double-heel surgery, sustained multiple fractures in his right ankle following a fall on his ranch in Port St. Lucie, Florida. This news, needless to say was a severe blow to the team. This serious injury may possibly make Cespedes miss the rest of the season.

"Since it is early there is no need for Met fans to panic at the current time." Tens of thousands of Mets fans are panicking right now, trust me.

A hot streak could help slowly turn that tide.

My prior guarded optimism broke when Cespedes fractured his ankle badly. My optimism was based on hope that he would return healthy and raring to go by around the All Star break - now that could turn into All Star Break 2020 for all we know.

They don't care about winning. That much is clear.
