KISSIMMEE, Fla. (May 15, 2019) – The Florida Fire Frogs swept the St. Lucie Mets in a doubleheader on Wednesday at Osceola County Stadium.
The Fire Frogs overcame a 5-0 deficit to win the first game 6-5 in nine innings. The Fire Frogs won the second game 5-4 by getting a game-ending double play with the bases loaded.
The Mets scored all five of their runs in the fourth inning of game 1 to take a 5-0 lead. Jacob Zanon, Matt Winaker, Manny Rodriguez and Blake Tiberi all had run-scoring hits in the inning.
The tide turned in the bottom of the fifth when Mets starter Dedniel Nunez walked the first three batters. Reliever Carlos Hernandez came in and gave up a two-run single to make it 5-2.
The Fire Frogs scored two more runs off of Hernandez in the sixth to cut their deficit to 5-4. In the bottom of the seventh Drew Lugbauer hit a game-tying RBI triple off of Blake Taylor with one out. Taylor managed to keep the winning run from scoring in the seventh and eighth innings.
Kevin Josephina blooped the game-winning single against Conner O’Neil in the bottom of the ninth.
In game 2, the Mets trailed 2-1 and tied the game on a double steal in the fifth when Nick Meyer raced home from third base on a throw up to second trying to catch Jacob Zanon.
However, the Frogs answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Greyson Jenista ripped a two-run triple off of Joseph Shaw. Josephina added a RBI double later in the inning to make it 5-2.
The Mets got a pair of run-scoring ground outs from Winaker and Cody Bohanek in the sixth to make it 5-4.
The Mets loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh on a single and two walks. Frogs reliever Kurt Hoekstra recovered to get Carlos Cortes to hit into a double play to end the game.
Kyle Wilson took the loss. He allowed four runs in four innings.
Luis Carpio had hits in both games of the doubleheader to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
The Mets (18-18) will look to snap their season-long five-game losing streak when they play the Fire Frogs (16-22) in another doubleheader on Thursday. First pitch in game 1 at Osceola County Stadium is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
