John From Albany – Mets News and Breakfast Links 9/9/2020

Good Morning. Happy Birthday Todd Zeile, Mike Hampton, and Billy Hamilton.  Orioles 11 Mets 2 and J-Rod still trying to buy Mets.

Mets Links:

Orioles 11 Mets 2 Michael Wacha 4 innings, 7 hits (2 HRs), 5 runs, 5 earned runs, 0 walks, 3 Ks, 71 pitches – 49 strikes; Robert Gsellman 3.2 innings, 6 hits (2 HRs), 6 runs, 6 earned runs, 2 walks, 1 K; Brad Brach 1.1 innings, 0 runs, 1 hit, 0 walks, 4 Ks; Jeff McNeil 2 for 3 (HR #3), 1 RBI, 1 run scored; Jake Marisnick  2 for 4 (HR #2), 1 RBI, 1 run scored; Michael Conforto 0 for 4– now hitting .340; Andres Gimenez 1 for 3, 2 Ks; Todd Frazier 1 for 4; Pete Alonso 0 for 4. (Box Score).

SNY.TV: The Mets and Orioles wrap up their two-game set on Wednesday night as RHP Rick Porcello faces RHP Jorge Lopez at 7:10 p.m.

Metstradamus: “Michael Wacha threw an 83 mph changeup down the middle to DJ Stewart for a 2-0 Oriole lead, and from then it was off to the races. Jake Marisnick homered for a brief glimmer of hope, but Wacha continued his cookie distribution by giving up a bomb to Ryan Mountcastle, and an RBI triple to Cedric Mullins before ceding to Robert Gsellman, who mercifully put us out of our misery.”

Mets360.com: It’s not a huge surprise that after yesterday’s big comeback came up short with a loss in extra innings that the Mets came out flat tonight. What will be a surprise is if either Robert Gsellman or Michael Wacha are on the active roster by game time Wednesday night.

NY Post: Robert Gsellman exits with strained oblique after return to bullpen. “Gsellman threw 76 pitches out of the pen, 24 more than he had in his last appearance in his ill-fated time as a starter and 19 more than any other outing this season. Manager Luis Rojas said he didn’t believe the added workload caused the injury, saying Gsellman was stretched out for the role.”

The Playoffs?

SNY.TV: Another disappointing Michael Wacha start increases Mets' sense of urgency: 'I’ve got to be better'. One-day-at-a-time approach persists, but Mets know they have to get hot.

Mets.com: deGrom to start Friday; Gsellman hurt. “Following a team off-day Thursday, Jacob deGrom will start Friday against the Blue Jays on regular rest, rather than Saturday on what would have been his regular rotation turn. Seth Lugo, who would have pitched Friday, will move back to Saturday to throw on two extra days’ rest.”

Yahoo Sports: Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez's pitch to save Mets bid includes $100 million World Series guarantee. “That pitch reportedly includes a guarantee the Mets will win a World Series within the first 10 years of their ownership, or else they will donate $100 million to New York charities.”

SNY.TV: Latest on Mets' sale process: Jennifer Lopez-Alex Rodriguez group not giving up on bidding process. Steve Cohen is reportedly in exclusive negotiations to purchase the team.

New York Mets released Darren Reed on September 9, 1993.

1997
Hall of Famer and beloved Phillies announcer Richie Ashburn, an excellent contact hitter who once fouled off 14 pitches in one at-bat, passes away of an apparent heart attack in his New York hotel room after broadcasting a Mets-Phillies game last night. 'Whitey' collected the most hits by any major leaguer during the decade of the 1950's.
2004
Lino Urdaneta's first major league appearance results in an earned run average of infinity when the Tigers rookie does not retire a batter, giving up five hits, one walk, and six earned runs. Fortunately for the right-hander, the Mets will give him the opportunity to appear in two games in 2007, in which he allows one run in one inning of work, to bring down his ERA to a much more respectable 63.00.

1969: With a 7 - 1 win, Tom Seaver hands Chicago its 6th straight loss, giving the Mets a sweep of two games. New York now trails the Cubs by one-half game.

2013 - In a rare highlight for the Nationals this season, Gio Gonzalez pitches a one-hitter and is backed by five homers as the team rolls to an easy 9 - 0 win over the Mets. The Nats start off with a bang as Denard Span and Ryan Zimmerman greet Mets starter Carlos Torres with back-to-back long balls. Pinch-hitter Zach Lutz has the Mets' only hit, a soft single that lands on the first base foul line to open the 7th.

Yanks, losers of 15 of 20, were bailed out in those 5 games by the loser Mets when the Mets let them win 3 straight.

The correct point to make is not that the Mets' starters' ERA is 5.21. It is: what are the Mets' starters' ERAs this year other than Jake and starter Lugo? Has to be 7.00 or higher. What is this, Las Vegas?

Why is Gsellman still here? May I suggest a short haircut? It worked for Jake?

You can't build a team on hitting and ignore pitching depth. The hitting will slump and pitchers always get hurt.
