As basically everyone knows by now Robert Gsellman was sent
back to the bullpen and I agree with the move. He just simply wasn’t effective
as a starter with an earned run average of 8.68 in four starts. He didn’t have
the success like he had when he first came up in 2016 and put up a 2.63 earned
run average in seven starts. He has done
a decent job as a reliever and the Mets are counting on him to be a factor for
their stretch run for a possible playoff berth. They are only two games out of
the last wildcard spot.
I knew the Mets were in
a tough spot with their starting rotation. They were running out of options and
didn’t have anyone else to turn to, which is why they turned to Gsellman, but in
my opinion, if you know a pitcher has been effective in relief don’t try to
make a starter of him again. Try not to disrupt anything and leave it alone. The
only other alternative the Mets could have done was possibly trade a position
player for a starting pitcher to fill the void.
During the trade
deadline I was a little surprised that there wasn’t any talk of the Mets doing
that. The rotation will be fine now that Peterson and Wacha have just come off
the injury list. The Mets are among the
top teams in team batting and if the pitching improves, they will definitely
contend for a playoff spot.
During this different type of season anything can happen and
a team that you don’t expect to contend can get hot at the end of the season
and sneak into the playoffs and surprise everyone, but when the dust clears I think
it will be the Dodgers, who win it all. They were my pick before the season
began and they still are. They are sizzling with the best record in baseball. Their
very hungry and determined especially since they found out that they lost the
World Series to teams that didn’t play fair two years in a row.
When the baseball world was saddened to hear that the great
Tom Seaver passed away last week, the Mets lost their best player ever. He
certainly was terrific with career totals of three Cy Young awards, 311 wins, 3,640
strikeouts and a 2.86 earned run average. He was one of the greatest pitchers
of all-time. My Condolences to the Seaver family.

Are we watching the same player? He hasn't pitched well in 4 years now. Why do people keep making excuses for him? He is terrible, time to end the Gsellman era.

Dallas I agree. Gsellman is in the bottom 20% of baseball with that many innings, easily. You keep expecting more and getting less like with Rosario. I would not want Gsellman on the 2021 Mets, absent a real turnaround. I have given up on expecting one.
To be honest, I would rather see Gsellman instead of Garcia. Can we send him back to Baltimore?
Dallas, I misspoke about Gsellman when I said He has done a decent job as a reliever", what I meant to say was excluding 2020 Gsellman has been a little more effective as a reliever than a starter in the past, like I said in my writeup the Mets should have traded a hitter for a starter, they could have packaged a hitter & Gsellman for a good starter. You have to ask yourself, why hasn't Brodie attempted to trade him? Apparently based on what Rojas has said he still has confidence in Gsellman, Perhaps Brodie will attempt to trade Gsellman after the season.
Not that I wish anyone injured but addition by subtraction happened last night. Gsellman was completely ineffective again. Lets hope this the the end of that era.
