Miami taking two OFs within the first 30 picks might seem like a stretch, but you always take the best player available. Not only is Montgomery a legitimate outfield prospect, there's some potential here for a two-way player. A switch-hitter with good barrel control from both sides of the plate, Montgomery was one of the more polished hitter we saw this summer. There's certainly a good bit of power in the bat as well. A centerfielder now, Montgomery likely slides into a corner as a pro where his plus arm and average speed should be a better fit. On the bump, Montgomery will flash a plus FB/CB combo with the heater getting up to 94 with above average spin. Miami adds a heady, polished prep here with some versatility and malleable talent into a system flush with high-upside talent.

Among the higher-level two-way prospects in the class, Montgomery brings an effortless, smooth approach to the game in the field and as a hitter. A 6-foot-1, 196-pound outfielder and lefthanded pitcher, Montgomery isn’t the toolsiest prospect you’ll see, but he does nearly everything well on the diamond. As a hitter, he has feel for the barrel from both sides of the plate with a gap-to-gap approach. His righthanded swing is more fluid presently and his left is a bit more rigid, but he has solid power potential from both sides with a projectable build that should fill out nicely. His loudest tool might be his arm, with some scouts putting a 65 or better grade on it from the outfield. That hasn’t translated to a plus fastball on the mound, but Montgomery does sit with a 90-93 mph fastball and has above-average ability to land his mid-70s curveball, with some feel for a low-80s changeup as well. His operation and arm action is free and easy on the mound and he’s shown enough on both sides of the ball that many scouts aren’t still sure which position offers more upside or is more likely to be his long-term home. As a Stanford commit, it wouldn’t be surprising if Montgomery got to campus and continued to do both.

The Rays continue to showcase their affinity for versatility and grab the best two-way player in the draft, Braden Montgomery. Montgomery has average to solid present offensive tools, where he could solidify his standing is on the mound as he tops out at 95 and has two decent secondary offerings.

The Dodgers will enter the 2021 draft as the defending champs and this mock has them locking in on two big-time prep performers from over on the east coast with their first two selections. Braden Montgomery oozes what you want out of a prep player in a combination of upside and polish. He can swing it well from either side of the plate with maturity to the approach and a good bit of jump off the barrel, while showing big arm strength from both the outfield and on the mound where the mechanics mimic the smoothness he shows across his game. Carter Holton sits among the best in terms of flat out performances on the circuit that we have seen in some time with a near 2:1 K/IP ratio over his last two years, using an electric mid-90s fastball, a wipeout slider and an above-average changeup to dominate even the best of lineups. -Tyler Russo
Sakowski's Take: It seems unlikely that the Dodgers would roll prep-prep out of the chute, but in this hypothetical it’s easy to like what they’ve done here. Montgomery established himself on the circuit as one of the premier prep bats with the peripheral tools to stand out in an outfield corner defensively, while Holton dominated all summer and fall with loud, loud stuff that belies his undersized stature, and he’s considered to be perhaps the best lefty in the class to some.

Montgomery (No. 21 in the 2021 high school class) was one of the top offensive performers at the event, going 3-for-9 with a double, four walks, one strikeout and a hit by pitch. That's consistent with what Montgomery has shown all summer. A Stanford commit, Montgomery is 6-foot-1, 196 pounds with a calm, balanced approach, putting together consistent, quality at-bats from both sides of the plate. He hit to all fields without much chase or swing and miss, including two walks against Solometo. Montgomery's best tool might be his arm, which is at least a plus tool, and he moved around well in center field. He's a fringe-average runner, though, so if he plays a corner that would put more demands on his power, but his feel for the barrel stood out here. Montgomery also pitched, touching the low 90s and showing good feel for a 74-77 mph curveball. The curve was his best pitch and he was able to land it for strikes, sprinkling in a low-80s changeup as well, but Montgomery's hitting ability is what impressed the most at this event.
Braden Montgomery, OF - Braden Montgomery went out and showed why he is an elite prospect with his performance here. He had a huge weekend at the plate, as well as showing he is a more than capable pitcher- even though his future is clearly with the bat. Montgomery has one of the best hit tools in the entire prep class, a high level of athleticism, and is just a fun player to watch. He came away with a first round grade for me.

Braden Montgomery is a 2021 OF/RHP, MIF with a 6-2 201 lb. frame from Madison, MS who attends Madison Central. Ran a 7.04-second sixty-yard dash. Primary outfielder with a long and athletic frame, showcasing plenty of quick-twitch actions to go along with feel for the game. Has proper footwork into the gather, carrying momentum well into throws with clean mechanics through the entire fielding process. Has present arm strength from the outfield, making accurate throws with true carry to bases at 96 miles per hour. Did not pitch or take batting practice at the event, though he has shown well as a good two-way prospect in the past. Posted a 92mph exit velocity.
Braden Montgomery - Much of the hype in the ‘Montgomery’ category goes to Benny, but Braden is every bit the exciting player and oozes polish on the diamond. His skillset was on full display Friday night again. Montgomery got his first at-bat in the second inning, getting deep into a count against flamethrower Chase Burns. He’d sit back on a 77mph curveball and smoke it deep into the right-centerfield gap. The ball was run down by Malakhi Knight, but the maturity to sit back on a good breaking ball certainly stands out. He’d draw a walk in his second at-bat. His third plate appearance was another impressive showing, scorching a come-backer right at pitcher Cale Lansville with a big exit velo. It was caught, but the approach and barrel control was undeniable all night.
