John From Albany - All Time Mets Opening Day Lineup


With the 2021 Mets Opening Day scheduled for today, here is a look at the All-Time Opening Day Lineup based on number of Opening Day Starting Lineup appearances.


Pitcher: Tom Seaver 11 Opening Day Starts.  Other Notables include Dwight Gooden-8; Opening Days Johan Santana-4; Tom Glavine-4. (Jacob deGrom will make his third straight Opening Day start tonight).


Catcher: Jerry Grote-9 Opening Day Starts followed by MikePiazza-7; Todd Hundley-6; John Stearns-5; and Gary Carter-5


First Base: (Tie) Keith Hernandez-6; Ed Kranepool-6; CarlosDelgado-4; Ike Davis-4.






Third Base: David Wright-12 (the Mets All-Time Opening Day Player); Howard Johnson-7; Hubie Brooks-4; Robin Ventura-3.





Right Field: Daryl Strawberry-7; Rusty Staub-3; Jerormy Burnitz-3; Bobby Bonilla-3; Curtis Granderson-3; Dave Kingman-3. (Michael Conforto will make his third straight opening day start in RF tonight).

DH – Michael Conforto and YoenisCespedes each tied with 1.  That’s right, in 2016 the Mets opened the season in Kansas City and Conforto was the DH.  Yoenis gave him company in the all time Mets Opening Day List when he DHed to open the season last year.

Some of those guys started a lot of openers because they were really good on good teams. Some were on anemic teams that could not find anyone better.

I sure am looking forward to tonight's starting line up - clear skies, nice temps, hopefully no lightning storms to force a postponement.
