Mack's Mock Pick - #83 - SS - Peyton Stovall

Peyton Stovall

Mack's spin -

Solid (not spectacular) infielder that projects to wind up on second.

Committed to Arkansas which could make for an over slot situation for an under slot player.

I have him at only the 15th SS on my board.

Peyton Stovall, SS, Haughton (La.) HS

Stovall’s hitting ability was obvious after a strong summer on the showcase circuit, but his lack of a second standout tool had clubs questioning whether they could draft him high enough to buy him out of an Arkansas commitment. He’s still an offensive-minded player who’s going to wind up at second base or in left field, but he’s establishing himself as one of the best high school bats available and should go in the top two rounds. He has an advanced left-handed stroke with bat speed and strength, homered 12 times in his first 21 games and could wind up as a plus hitter with plus power.

Peyton Stovall is exactly the type of bat that surprises on draft day. Teams pay a premium for the peace of mind hit tool at the next level. If he doesn’t go in the first round, he’s a pretty decent bet to get popped in the top 100 picks.

An Arkansas commit, Stovall certainly has a solid fallback plan too, so he won’t be cheap.

Stovall fits the mold of the Todd Walker, Daniel Murphy, Jason Kipnis types of yesteryear. His talent with the bat give him a pretty solid floor. He’s a personal favorite of mine, and I think he makes a lot of sense for Seattle at pick no. 47... even more-so as an overspend option at pick no. 84, though I’d be surprised if he lasted that long.

For the high school hitters, it’s hard to look past Peyton Stovall of Haughton, LA. He’s hitting the cover off the ball this spring and it’s really caught scouts attention. He’s pushing into day one consideration for some teams. Elsewhere, Fort Pierce, Florida outfielder Jay Allen has really taken steps forward in terms of his physicality at the plate and power projection. The athleticism has ticked up. He’s certainly creeping into those conversations as well. Another one is IMG Academy shortstop Drake Varnado.

58. SS Peyton Stovall | School: Haughton HS, LA | Commit: Arkansas | B / T: L / R | Ht: 6’0 | Wt: 185lbs | Age: 18.4

Hit tool has always been a carrying tool consistently finding barrels into the gaps alongside solid defense up the middle and a shot to stick at SS, although the profile may best fit overall at 2B or 3B. Power has popped massively in the spring, one of the biggest risers early in the spring has put himself in early round consideration. Strong, balanced overall skillset that’s starting to put it all together and show more Power then expected at this stage of the development.

Peyton Stovall, SS, Haughton (La.) HS (NR)

Stovall was among the first group of players left off our preseason top 200 draft list, but the early reports on his bat this year are loud.

He has demolished the high school pitching he’s faced, showing plenty of in-game power and some scouts believe he might be one of the better pure hitters in the class. He has impressive bat speed and balance in the swing, but his supplemental tools come up a bit short.

Scouts believe Stovall will be a better fit for second base at the next level thanks to some arm strength questions, but you only have to look at the Red Sox’s Nick Yorke selection in 2020 to see that teams are looking for bats, not gloves, at the top of the draft.

Stovall’s performance has him climbing. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him go off the board within the first two rounds.

Q - Some high school players not on the Top 100 that could climb up boards?

Jim Callis: I'll tag-team on this question with non-Top 100 guys from my half of the country who could move up ... Alabama HS LHP Maddux Bruns (huge ceiling), Louisiana HS SS Peyton Stovall, South Carolina HS RHP Daniel Brooks, Mississippi LHP Doug Nikhazy (high floor guy).

PG -

Peyton Stovall is a 2021 MIF/ with a 6-0 185 lb. frame from Haughton, LA who attends Haughton. Medium to large athletic build with room to still fill into as he continues to develop, posted a 6.90 second 60 yard dash time. Primary infielder, athleticism is present, moves very well into the hole as well as up the middle. Controls his glove work while on the move. Good fluidity to and through the baseball. Makes difficult plays look easy with his agility. Arms strength across the diamond is good and is continuing to develop. At the plate, uses an upright and slightly open stance with a low leg kick trigger. Steep barrel plane through the zone, handsy foundation. Ability to drive the ball into both gaps, fluid and smooth stroke overall.

Prep Baseball Report -

8/01/19 - Physical 6-foot, 175-pound frame. One of the top offensive performers at the Future Games overall, premium hit tool. Productive at-bats all weekend, consistent hard contact, impact bat. Left-handed hitter hits from a taller, upright stance, simple load with a minimal, small stride, short compact path with balance and strength throughout, uses a gap-to-gap approach with good rhythm and timing, creates good extension with advanced bat speed yielding an exit velocity of 94 mph. Solid defender, hands and feet work well together, solid actions with clean exchanges. Short arm action into ¾ release with accuracy and carry on throws that produced an 84 mph positional velocity. Likely projects as an offensive second baseman going forward. Solid athleticism, posted a 6.90 60-yard dash.

Peyton Stovall, SS, Haughton HS (La.) -- He’s probably a second baseman at the next level, but Stovall is going to hit. The Arkansas commit has sneaky pop from the left side and shows an innate ability to barrel up the baseball. He has the chance to be a very good defender at second should he make that transition.
