Cubs 3 Mets 1 (Box Score): Brandon Nimmo CF 0 for 5, 3 Ks; Francisco Lindor SS 0 for 4, 1 walk; Dominic Smith LF 2 for 4;  Pete Alonso 1B 0 for 4; Michael Conforto RF 0 for 4, 1 walk 2 Ks; Jeff McNeil 2B 0 for 3, 1 walk; J.D. Davis 3B 2 for 3 HR, 1 walk, 1 K; James McCann C 0 for 3, 1 walk, 1 K; Taijuan Walker P 0 for 1, 3.2 innings, 2 hits, 3 runs – 2 earned, 6 walks, 7 Ks; Robert Gsellman 1/3 inning, 1 K; Jacob Barnes, 2 innings, 2 Ks; Jeurys Familia, 1 inning, 1 hit, 1 K; Trevor May 1 inning, 1 K.

Deesha Thosar NY Post: “A sleepy offense, a costly defensive error and a couple of ejections sunk the Mets’ ship in their series opener at Wrigley Field. But mostly, they just looked off...Only three Mets collected hits against Jake Arrieta... Among them was J.D. Davis, who scored the Amazin’s only run on a homer...But he also committed two throwing errors at third base, the first of which hurt his team”.

Tim Healey Newsday: Davis, whom the Mets considered replacing over the offseason, said he had trouble gripping the ball because it was cold out (36 degrees at game time). He tried to one-hop it to Alonso but threw it a little too hard, and the hop occurred too close to first base.

Mike Puma NY Post: “Thirty-six degrees at first pitch was a heat wave compared to the icicles that formed on the Mets’ bats Tuesday night…. Taijuan Walker and manager Luis Rojas were both tossed for complaining about plate umpire John Libka’s strike zone. Walker’s ejection occurred after he had been pulled from the game. Rojas’ heave-ho, which came later, was the first of his major league managerial career.”

Brian Joura Mets360: “The Mets loaded the bases in the ninth inning but could not complete the comeback…Two walks surrounding an out brought Luis Guillorme up as a pinch-hitter and he promptly singled to load the bases…But Brandon Nimmo struck out for the third time and Francisco Lindor hit a weak groundout to end the game”.(Subscription required).

Metstradamus: “Say what you want about any aspect of the game, the umpiring, the weather, perhaps pulling Walker too late, the bottom line is that the Mets’ bats need to heat up, especially with runners in scoring position. But you knew that, right? You knew that since what … 1989?”

USA Today: New York Mets move Jacob deGrom back 1 day for extra rest. The 32-year-old Jacob deGrom was slated to start Thursday at Wrigley Field, but the two-time NL Cy Young Award winner was moved back to Friday's home game against the Washington Nationals.

Mike Puma: James McCann a big factor to Mets rotation’s early success. “The Mets entered play Tuesday at Wrigley Field with a 2.27 ERA from the starting rotation — which ranked third in the major leagues.”

Mike’s Mets: I'm a James McCann Fan Already.

MLB.com: MetsMinor League Spring Training report. The organization also boasts a young system with four Top 100 prospects in Francisco Alvarez, Ronny Mauricio, Matthew Allan and Brett Baty, all of whom are 21 years old or younger and have yet to play above the Low-A level…Mauricio figures to open higher than the other three, perhaps as high as Double-A Binghamton where he could focus on getting more out of his plus power potential as a switch-hitter.

Amazing Avenue: The Mets are shifting like they never have before. The Mets’ defensive positioning may finally be caught up to the modern game.

Although he breaks his bat on the swing, Ike Davis becomes the first major leaguer to hit a grand slam for two different teams in April when he homers off Mike Leake, helping the Pirates defeat the Reds, 6-5, at PNC Park. Before being traded by the Mets to Pittsburgh earlier in the month, the 27 year-old first baseman went deep against another Cincinnati hurler, J.J. Hoover, for a walk-off slam in the bottom of the ninth at Citi Field.

Didnt get to watch it. Disappointing but hard to hit inside a refrigerator. Walker probably also impacted by cold. JD 2 errors? Cold. Meanwhile, it was mid 70s in the daytime in NYC. PLAY DAY GAMES IN APRIL. On average, 10 degrees warmer, and maybe even sunshine.

The whole team has morphed into Kevin Plawecki.

Happy to get out of Chicago with a win.

I realize that with all the days off, Rojas is trying to get his regulars ABs. But I'd like to see a day off for McNeil, Nimmo, Conforto, Alonso, McCann. Sometimes it helps to sit back and watch a game.

Use the full team.

Bullpen looked good.

Sucks to play baseball in that weather. It really does.

Davis's defense wouldn't be getting much ink if they could score 4 or 5 runs a game. This team doesn't seem to be particularly opportunistic at this point.

You can't generate any offensive output when you are going through an off again on again schedule in freezing weather.

You just can't.

It will start to get better next week.
