Steve Serby NY Post: Plenty of blame to go around for Mets’ ugly Jacob deGrom hangover. “The whole damn team suffered a deGrom hangover, from The Hole In The Bat Gang to The Hole In The Glove Gang, and mostly to Stroman. For Stroman, (for anyone really), this was akin to following prime Sinatra, or prime Springsteen.”

Mike Puma NY Post: “Stroman didn’t have it, his defense didn’t help him, the offense couldn’t bail him out and the Mets lost in ugly fashion to the Nationals, 7-1 in front of a crowd of 8,051.”

Brian Joura Mets360: “Stroman allowed an unearned run in the first inning thanks to an error by Michael Conforto that turned a leadoff single into a runner on third base. Conforto didn’t get charged with an error in the second inning but made another poor throw to the plate on a hit by the pitcher to shallow right field. (Subscription required).”

Metstradamus: “…the Mets missed on the one chance they had to get back in the game as after Conforto homered in the 4th, the Mets got a couple of baserunners on, but James McCann popped up to short to end the threat.”

Deesha Thosar NY Daily News: “Stephen Tarpley, who was called up from the Mets’ alternate site on Friday after Joey Lucchesi was optioned, allowed all four of his batters to reach base via hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch in the fifth. Encouragingly, Robert Gsellman pitched three scoreless innings with one walk and two strikeouts after he took the ball from Tarpley.”

Tim Healey Newsday: “Two themes of the Mets’ week: weak starting pitching and defense to match. In the past five games — a full turn through the rotation — only one Mets starter (deGrom) has reached the fifth inning...the team has committed seven errors and allowed eight unearned runs...Overall this season, nearly one-quarter of the Mets’ runs allowed — 16 of 67 — have been unearned.”

Today's Game: Nationals (7-10) @ Mets (8-7), 1:10 pm

NYM: Taijuan Walker (#42, 28, RHP, 0-1, 3.21)
WSN: Patrick Corbin (#42, 31, LHP, 0-2, 10.95)

Ken Davidoff NY Post: Moves MLB teams could have made instead of paying big-money duds.  For the Mets – “Subtract: Robinson Cano ($20.25 million) Add: Nolan Arenado ($17.5 million) and Carlos Rodon ($3 million)”

The Big Lead: New York Mets Fans Are Seriously Already Booing Francisco Lindor.

Anthony DiComo Mets.com: “Thor hits 97, 'very strong' in 1st rehab outing. Also appearing in the intrasquad game was reliever Drew Smith, who has now faced live hitters multiple times as he works his way back from a bout of right shoulder soreness.”

CBS Sports: Mets' Carlos Carrasco on track to make season debut second week of May.

Yardbarker: Mets' Dellin Betances transferred to 60-day IL with right shoulder impingement.

I was surprised by this. Biddy was 4-0 with a .086 ERA for Columbia, Kingsport and Brooklyn in 2019 and threw mid-90's.

National Pastime.com:

1963

In the second year of their existence, the Mets win a game on a Thursday for the first time in franchise history when they beat Chicago at Wrigley Field, 3-2. During their inaugural season, the expansion team failed to register a victory in the 15 games played on the fifth day of the week.

1984

In a 2-1 victory over Montreal at Olympic Stadium, Mets right-hander Dwight Gooden becomes the first teenager to strike out ten batters in a major league game since Bert Blyleven accomplished the feat with the Twins in 1970. The 19 year-old rookie will lead the National League with 276 strikeouts this season.

2000

Honoring the work stoppage called by Cuban-Americans over the Elian Gonzalez immigration controversy, Marlins Alex Fernandez, Vladimir Nunez, Michael Tejera, and Mike Lowell, Devil Rays' Jose Canseco, and Mets' Rey Ordonez and Cookie Rojas do not participate in major league action. The protest stems from the federal district court's ruling that the five year-old boy must be returned to his father in Cuba, taking him away from the maternal relatives living in Miami.

2012

David Wright becomes the Mets' all-time RBI leader with 735 runs batted in when he hits a two-run home run in the team's 5-1 victory over the Marlins at Citi Field. The 29 year-old third baseman passes Darryl Strawberry's franchise mark with his sixth-inning blast off Mark Buehrle.

Baseball Reference:

1962 - Catcher Harry Chiti is traded for himself when the Cleveland Indians send him to the New York Mets in exchange for a player to be named later. On June 15th, the Mets will sell Chiti back to Cleveland to complete the deal.

2010: Mike Pelfrey throws a rain-shortened five-inning shutout as the Mets complete a series sweep of the Braves, 1 - 0, at Citi Field. Pelfrey is in trouble all five innings, but manages to escape unscathed in extending his string of scoreless innings to 24. It is actually Raul Valdes who is on the mound for New York when the game is stopped in the top of the 6th, but everything after the 5th is wiped out, giving Pelfrey credit for a complete game. The game's lone run comes when Jose Reyes runs wild in spite of the sloppy conditions, stealing second after a two-out bloop single in the 1st, and coming to score on Jason Bay's infield single when 3B Chipper Jones's throw skips away from 1B Troy Glaus just enough to allow Reyes to dash home.

Mack’s Blast from the Past4/25/2014:  Mack’s Morning Report – CamChat Starting Pitching. Mack looked at Mets starting rotation with this prediction for the 2015 staff: “There seems to be only one etched in stone pitcher come next spring and that is Matt Harvey (DL). Any combination of Zack Wheeler (4.63), Dillon Gee (3.58), Jon Niese (X.XX), Bartolo Colon (5.40), Jeremy Hefner (DL), Jenrry Mejia (1.99), Rafael Montero (3.80), Noah Syndergaard (4.95), and Jacob deGrom (1.57) will fill in the other four slots.”

I remember in 1968 when Swoboda hit all those April HRs, and he was interviewed and said, I don't know why they keep throwing me fastballs. The fastballs stopped and so did the homers.

Mets are just so...dreary. Least productive offense in baseball. Rain should end and let them play today.

Tatis showing Lindor how it is done. The sore-shouldered one hits 4 homers in 2 days. While Lindor hits like Al Weis. (And Jeff McNeil hits like Al Weis, etc.)

Matz goes to 4-0, and gives up 3 runs in 5 innings. 3 runs in 5 innings as a Met is an almost certain loss.

Jeff McNeil hitting .188 despite 4 strikeouts in 56 at bats. Just weird.

That Jed Lowrie HR was a real poke. 3 HRs, SEVENTEEN RBI'S, and .296 so far. Insane.

What's the plus/minus on the Mets scoring more than 2 runs today?

Morning John

Hope we get thebgane in...

Maybe that's the wrong approach.

Target for 20 7 inning doubleheaders in August.

Yeah.

That's the ticket.

"Put the ball in play and good things will happen." Great strategy for the Nats and any team that plays the Mets.

Mets will see more and more teams take advantage of this against them especially as they play outfielders deep.

Tim Healey's stat us very telling - 1/4th of runs allowed by Mets are un-earned.

Mack - could rain outs now and 7 inning Double Dips in August help the Mets? Sure as they should have Thor, Lugo, and Carrasco back. But if don't catch the ball - it doesn't matter who is out there.

The lack of defense last night coupled with the home umpire's refusal to give Stro the low zone, critical to hi game, had him off from the get go and drove me to 90 Day Fiancee reruns.
