Tom Seaver’s first Major League win, a 1983 Double Header sweep brought to you by Tom and Mookie, and a Frank Viola win.  These are just a few of the games the Mets have played on April 20th.

Hunter Pence's 8th inning HR broke a 3-3 tie and made a loser of R.A. Dickey.  Daniel Murphy hit a 2 run HR and Carlos Beltran hit two doubles for the Mets in the loss.

Al Leiter gave up a grand slam to Barry Larkin and a 2 run HR to Aaron Boone giving up 8 runs in 3 innings.  Edgardo Alfonzo hit two doubles, Jay Payton got 2 RBIs, and Todd Zeile went 3 for 3 with a walk in the loss for the Mets.

Johnny Bench hit a 2 run HR off Danny Frisella in the bottom of the 8th to turn a 2-1 Mets lead into an eventual 3-2 Reds win.   Duffy Dyer’s pinch hit single off Don Gullett drove in 2 to give the Mets the 2-1 lead in the top of the 7th.

National Pastime.com: Tom Seaver, a right-hander the Mets obtained in a lottery drawing that included the Braves, Phillies, and Indians, gets his first major-league win when the team beat the Cubs, 6-1. The 22 year-old rookie, who will become known as the 'Franchise,' goes 7.2 innings, giving up eight hits and one run in the Shea Stadium contest. 

Tommy Davis was the hitting star of the game for the Mets with a solo HR and a double.

National Pastime.com: Appearing as a pinch hitter at Petco Park, Julio Franco becomes the oldest major leaguer to hit a home run. The 47 years, 240 days old's eighth-inning blast, which put the Mets ahead in their 7-2 victory over the Padres, surpasses Jack Quinn, who accomplished the feat as a pitcher for the Philadelphia A's at the age of 46 years, 357 days. 

At Petco Park in his first at-bat of the season, Kaz Matsui hits an inside-the-park round-tripper, making it the third successive season in which the Mets second baseman has hit a home run in his initial plate appearance of the year. Ken Griffey Jr. also accomplished the feat starting in 1997 with the Mariners but had walked before going deep.

By losing the opener, Chicago set a National League record (0-14) for the most consecutive losses to start a season and has the second-worst record behind the Orioles, who lost 21 decisions before winning a game in 1988.

In that game in 1983, Seaver in career year 17 rolls back the clock with a 3 hit shutout, fanning 9. Amazing.

3 years later, in the great year of 1986, Sid tossed a 2 hitter. Most of his starts, he was real tough.

Also, in 1963, Al Jackson outpitched Warren Spahn, and I glanced at the 1963 Yankees box score. They lost 7-1. Opposing pitcher threw a complete game and fanned just 1. Yankee pitchers fanned just 3. Nowadays, that's the first inning for Ks.

Josh Hejka talked about why there are so many strikeouts in baseball yesterday. Pitchers are throwing better and hitters swinging for the fences. That's the bottom line but Josh explains it much better than that.

Loved watching the video of Franco's 402nd save. He finished with 424, and it seems like there were men on base in all of them
