Mack's Mock Pick - #80 - OF - John Rhodes

John Rhodes

Mack's spin -

Rhodes is not having a great 2021, but that does not lower expectations for this guy.

His defense is improving after a piss poor 2020 and he projects out as a corner outfielder.

I like him here though most have him going far lower.

70. OF John Rhodes | School: Kentucky | B / T: R / R | Ht: 6’0 | Wt: 200lbs | Age: 21

Rhodes brings a fairly balanced profile to the table. An Above-average Hit tool and runner with some pop to the pull side that should see him reach 15+ per season with his impressive bat speed and loft built into the swing and sees him driving the ball into the LCF gap consistently. Doesn’t strike out often and has solid OBP numbers. Profiling as a top of the order bat. Likely a Corner OF at the next level, has shown improvements defensively after a pretty rough showing in 2020.

John Rhodes has been very good so far this year. That’s his 5th bomb, the potential overall offensive upside along with athleticism/defensive skills make a very enticing draft prospect. He’s an eligible sophomore as a result of the draft being moved.

Down the Draft Board Sleeper Option: John Rhodes, OF, Kentucky. The instinct was to go with the buzziest name in college baseball, UNC’s Justice Thompson, in this spot, but I don’t quite see it. But then I discovered Rhodes, who is going to appeal to Kantrovitz’ statistical modeling (he has a career 1.119 OPS at Kentucky) and was an absolute star in the Northwoods League last summer, hitting .378/.495/.500 with a wood bat. He’s also one of the youngest D1 draft-eligible players in the class.
