Very odd in that Carlton/Koosman game. The 2 combined for 15 innings and just 5 Ks. Also odd was it was like 2021...Cards’ 21st game but just the Mets’ 16th.
And what about that 2-0 loss in 1973 where Seaver lost to Pat Dobson in just one hour and 37 minutes!
Don’t get caught in traffic getting to the game on that one.
So, what's missing from the NY Mets' 2021 equation?
Personally, I think 95% of the equation is covered this season. The Mets have Marcus Stroman and Taijuan Walker in their rotation, and pitching very nicely alongside of Jake and David. David has been a little bit up and down early on. But I think that even a blind man can see that he is going to be something consistently special very soon. And from the left side too, which makes this even that much better. So to me the Mets have four competent starters here now with two outstanding ones still out rehabbing.
The uncovered part of this equation, is perhaps the fifth starter.
I was hoping that Joey Lucchesi would show us something good soon, but that's on hold for now. Noah Syndergaard and Candy Carrasco are still out and it may still be too early for anyone to guess each one's specific timetable return. So the Mets have a "fifth starter void" in play right now.

What about stretching out either Jeurys Familia (say to 5 innings) now that Jeurys has his old body and stamina back. Or Robert Gsellman. Both have started here before. In the beginning the only reason Jeurys was sent to the bullpen was mainly because of the pitchers ahead of him, like Matt Harvey and Jake deGrom. But it did prove itself to be a good move for the Mets and Jeurys too. But now they have Edwin Diaz and Miguel Castro there holding the fort. But maybe Jeurys could in fact be stretched out again to start?
Hmm. Interesting.
Another idea for the five slot, what about Thomas Szapuki or Drew Smith?
I cannot even find Thomas on the internet at current. He's not on Syracuse. But at 24 years of age, and with some good credentials in MiLB, Thomas would add in here another potential quality left-handed starter to this equation. And he is 3.5 years away from his TJ injury too.
Drew Smith had a nice 2021 ST. I always saw something in this guy. It came easy to him. But is he healthy again and ready to resume pitching?
Hmm. Interesting.
A trade is my final suggestion.
To their credit the Mets do appear to have adequate bench depth at all positions right now. They have players that are three deep at positions. Like maybe Albert Almora, Luis Guillorme, Kevin Pillar. There is maneuverability from within, in other words possibly for this.
The one thing that I have learned over the years being a NY Mets, is to never put all your Mets eggs into one Mets basket when it is in regards to waiting on players to come back whole from injuries. Never. Never. Never.

Anon - Szapucki is currently at the Alternate site camp. He struck out 15 in an inter squad game their the other day. Syracuse Manager Chad Krueger mentioned him first when asked about pitchers. I think we will see him start Tuesday night in Syracuse.

I don't think your ideas for the 5 starter are, "hmmmm -- interesting."
Carrasco is back soon. Noah is back in June. Lucchesi -- well, I hope he's going to be in the pen, eventually, as a second LHP -- is good, too.
No need whatsoever to stretch out Familia or horse around with Gsellman in that role.
It's just not a worry for this team.
And I think the pen is in good shape, too, with Lugo due back and Smith getting healthy and Lucchesi in the wings.
We are at the point of the season where you play the guys you've got, you sit back and watch, and *over time* you decide where there are weakness/needs.
It might be that we want another big-time bullpen arm.
Or an upgrade in the outfield IF Dom Smith continues to play very poorly on both sides of the ball.
Or we need a solid everyday player -- who can hit AND field -- to take over 3B.
Or none of those things.
Cohen has the money to make a July deadline deal.
For now, I'm good with what we've got.

Jimmy, I too am good with what we've got...and I am quite confident in the successful returns of Thor and Cookie. Lugo, not as much, but I am reasonably confident on him.
Familia was a lousy starter when he was a minor leaguer. I do not want to see him starting.
I do like Lucchesi a lot.
Smith? He should get hot soon. If not, Pillar will play more - he's good.
Yes, Cohen is lying in wait for the trade deadline. Any needs will get addressed.
