The top hitting prospect on a JSerra Catholic (Calif.) High team that includes a pair of pro pitching prospects—LHP Gage Jump and RHP Luke Jewett—Schrier raised eyebrows this summer with a loud showing at the inaugural Ultimate Baseball Championship. The UCLA commit doesn’t have the most projectable frame, but at 6-foot-1, 195 pounds Schrier has plenty of compact strength that translates to a solid throwing arm and all-fields pop with the bat. Schrier’s swing itself isn’t the prettiest or most fluid, but he has a knack for putting the bat on the ball and has shown an ability to drive pitches with authority to the pull side and the other way. At times he will lunge a bit too much at the ball and put himself into bad hitting positions, but when he stays back things generally work well. While some scouts believe he has the hands and the arm strength to stick at shortstop in college, others believe he profiles best as an offensive-oriented middle-infielder who might wind up moving to second base. Schrier has also spent some time at third. He turned in a plus 60-yard dash time at Perfect Game’s National showcase, running it in 6.63 seconds.

The Cardinals take Chase Petty with the 18th overall pick, hoping to find their next Jordan Hicks. Petty is young for his class with electric arm speed and has already shown the ability to touch triple digits. St. Louis has a serious need for a shortstop in their farm system, with just one true shortstop being ranked within their top 30 prospect rankings (per mlb.com). Petty’s a triple digit high schooler with the best stuff on the prep side in the class while Schrier has been a consummate performer on the circuit. Hailing from the Alma Mater of former Reds first rounder Hunter Greene, Schrier is yet another talented prep shortstop in the deep 2021 class. Hits from a simple line-drive focused right handed swing. He's an above average runner that's posted fringe-plus run times, and shown smooth actions in the field, with the ability to stick at the six. Has been impressive at third base during summer showcase, as well as pumping some pretty impressive batting practice reps.

Schrier has some similarities to Lile, in the sense that he doesn’t have a super projectable frame, but has plenty of present strength with a muscular, 6-foot-1, 195-pound frame. His statistical performance wasn’t loud at the UBC, but scouts like a lot of the things Schrier does.
He shows power to all fields, and while it might not be the prettiest swing they’ve ever seen, evaluators have some confidence that he’s going to be able to hit because of his track record and given how often he puts the barrel on the ball. Defensively, he has the arm strength and hands that could keep him at shortstop at the next level, where he would most likely profile as an offensive-oriented player there.
Schrier will be seen plenty throughout his high school season, as JSerra Catholic is loaded this year, with fellow top 100 prospects LHP Gage Jump and RHP Luke Jewett.

Cody Schrier - If you like consistency, Schrier is the bat for you. He has been a consistent performer on the circuit this summer with a powerful swing that has generated loud contact wherever he has gone. Hailing from SoCal powerhouse JSerra Catholic, the UCLA commit did not have the best game, as he struck out once and flew out twice after, but he did showcase well at shortstop with a strong arm and good instincts. He has great bat speed and has good power from the right side that plays well. His lone strikeout did come from Chase Petty’s cement mixer of a slider, but managed to make good contact against Mason Albright’s fastball and Irving Carter’s splitter.

Schrier did a lot of what scouts wanted to see him do in Fort Myers, walking a lot while still taking damage swings and limiting the swing-and-miss simultaneously. He’s got a chance to play several infield spots and hit for serious righthanded power, a commodity especially in today’s game, though he may end up hitting his way through the PAC-12 at UCLA before pro ball.
