Mack's Mock Pick - # 70 - 1B - Ryan Holgate

Ryan Holgate

Mack's spin -

Holgate is a bat first corner outfielder who I target as a future first baseman due to his limited defensive skills.

He has cut down his K/9 ratio this year while still maintaining a decent BB/9 stat.

#70mis a good place for him in the draft.

An early season riser, Holgate impressed in 2020 short season and during the Northwoods league throughout the summer where he hit 13 HR in 58 Games. That success has carried over into 2021, showcasing that improved Hit tool that grades as Average with the Power numbers likely settling in the 24-28 HR a season range. Solid OBP numbers but will always have strikeouts be apart of his game. A Corner OF defensively. Similar to Max Kepler

A lot of scouts really, really like Arizona OF Ryan Holgate this year in the MLB Draft. Have received a few "Trevor Larnach" comps on his profile. Have had two people tell me Holgate has 70-grade raw power. Huge bat.

Commit/Drafted: Twins 2018 (32)

Age At Draft: 21.1

Holgate impressed scouts with a solid bat and plus raw power out of high school, but made it to campus at Arizona after the Twins took him in the 32nd round. A 6-foot-1, 205-pound outfielder, Holgate’s game is centered around his power, which is at least plus and could be a tick better. Teams hoped he would hit better at the collegiate level, as he struggled to a .240/.378/.437 line as a freshman in 2019, but was hitting .377/.459/.547 through 15 games in the shortened 2020 season. While Holgate strikes out at a high rate (24.8%), he also takes his walks (15.5%), which has helped keep him on base even when he’s struggled with the bat. Still, there are contact questions and Holgate will be limited to a corner as a 40-grade runner who might be able to work to get to an average arm.

Ryan Holgate, OF (2021): Holgate and his immense power will be the fulcrum of a Wildcat lineup that will no longer be with slugger Austin Wells. Keep an eye on freshman OF Chase Davis.

Much like many other baseball players across the country this year, Arizona Wildcats outfielder Ryan Holgate’s Spring and Summer were unlike any other.

For those that don’t know, Ryan had a promising start to his 2020 season for the Wildcats, especially as he hit an impressive .377 in 15 games. However, as the Covid-pandemic hit and impacted numerous other Student-Athletes, he suddenly found himself in need to find a place to play for the rest of the Spring and Summer.

Completely changing the baseball landscape, Holgate was luckily able to find a landing spot this past Summer with the Santa Barbara Foresters of the conveniently canceled California Collegiate League.

However, the Foresters were able to put together a schedule, culminating in a run to the National Baseball Congress World Series Championship. In 32 games for the Foresters, Holgate hit for a .295 average with four Home Runs and 20 RBI’s.

Holgate was so impressive this past Summer that MLB Pipeline’s talent evaluators were able to see what they needed to include him in their Top 100 Draft Prospects.

Outfielder Ryan Holgate (No. 82), outfielder Donta Williams (No. 126), and incoming right-handed pitcher Austin Smith (No. 137) represented the Cats in the Top 150.

Holgate, who enters his third season with the Wildcats in 2021, has been a crucial piece of Arizona's lineup during his time in Tucson. The slugging outfielder has collected 14 doubles, eight home runs, and 45 RBI to go along with his .273 career batting average. In just 15 games during the 2020 season, Holgate led the team and ranked eighth in the Pac-12 with a .377 batting average and ran together a .459 on-base percentage after reaching base safely in all 15 games.

Holgate is one of the better, more complete hitters from the college side in this draft. It's a strong, lefty cut that has above average pull-side power and LCF gap power the other way. Holgate gets a ton of leverage from his lower half in his swing, and there's likely a better power package here as a pro. Holgate is an average runner with good instincts, so he may stick in a corner as a pro, though there is a slight chance he ends up at first base. Some similarities to Trevor Larnach's draft profile.

2-25-20 - tucson.com -

Holgate, a prized recruit from Davis, California, had a good freshman season, at least by normal standards. He hit seven home runs, drew 35 walks and had a .378 on-base percentage.

Arizona’s 2019 freshman class was anything but normal, however. Austin Wells was the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. Dayton Dooney hit 10 homers. Branden Boissiere hit .403 in Pac-12 play.

It was easy to overlook the fact that Holgate had more homers than Wells (five) and as many walks as top-of-the-order sparkplug Cameron Cannon, who was picked in the second round of the ’19 MLB draft by the Boston Red Sox.

No Wildcat is more apt to blast a baseball onto the roof of the Terry Francona Hitting Center than the left-handed-hitting Holgate, who introduced himself to Tucson by slugging three home runs in his first four games. But as Johnson noted, Holgate “really wants to be a complete baseball player.” His .240 batting average and .891 fielding percentage were the lowest among UA regulars last season.

Holgate led the Northwoods League with 13 home runs. He slashed .297/.392/.554 and drove in 53 runs in 222 at-bats.

Prep Baseball Report -

Holgate has gone on a recent tear, with home runs in three consecutive games on May 8, May 15, and May 17. Davis HS has played as strong a schedule as any team in Northern California this season and their conference is one of the stronger ones in the state. Holgate has hit .368 for the season (118 plate appearances, 95 at-bats), with 26 runs, 28 RBI, 4 doubles and 5 home runs. The power numbers are modest, but he has been pitched as you might expect... as the player other teams don't want to let beat them.

Holgate seems a hard selection, considering they have Pete and Dom, but if he continues to impress, you never know.
