Mets Links:

Marlins 3 Mets 0 (Box Score): Brandon Nimmo CF 1 for 3, walk and a K; Francisco Lindor SS 0 for 3 with a K; Michael Conforto RF 0 for 4, 3 Ks; Pete Alonso 1B 0 for 4, 3 Ks; Dominic Smith LF 1 for 3, 2 Ks; James McCann C 0 for 3; Jeff McNeil 2B 0 for 2, 1 walk; Jonathan Villar 3B 0 for 3, 3 Ks; Jacob deGrom P 1 for 2; (L, 0-1) 8 innings, 5 hits, 1 run (HR), 14 Ks, no walks; Edwin Diaz 2/3 inning, 3 hits, 2 runs (both earned), 1 walk; Jeurys Familia 1/3 inning, no hits, no runs, 1 K.

SNY.TV: "The Mets squandered an opportunity right away after they opened the game with runners on 1st and 3rd with nobody out but did not score. Brandon Nimmo doubled and Francisco Lindor reached on an error, but after Lindor was caught stealing, Michael Conforto and Pete Alonso both struck out to end the inning."

Mets.com: For an encore on Saturday, deGrom matched his career high with 14 strikeouts at Citi Field, limiting the Marlins to one run in eight innings. It wasn’t enough. The Mets recorded just three hits all afternoon in a 3-0 loss to the Marlins, sticking deGrom with an 0-1 record despite his 0.64 ERA through two starts.

Newsday: “Among the creatively cruel, mind-bending ways for Jacob deGrom to lose a game — and we all know there have been dozens of these during his tortured Mets career — Saturday’s defeat was especially aggravating…That’s because the Marlins’ Jazz Chisholm Jr., a very talented rookie playing in his 28th game, somehow caught up to an 0-and-2 fastball traveling at 100.4 mph. It wasn’t even a strike.”

Brian Joura Mets360.com: “If there was any justice in the world, everyone who wore a Mets uniform today not named Jacob deGrom would be forced to leave the stadium wearing a cone of shame.” (Subscription required)

Metstradamus: “I understand that the other lefty hitters that are below him aren’t exactly tearing up the league, but Jeff McNeil looks infinitely better than Conforto right now, and seeing as if there are other options, the Mets should be under no obligation to let Conforto figure it out from the three hole.”

NY Post:

SNY.TV: The Mets and Marlins will return to action Sunday for a 1:10 p.m. start on SNY. Marcus Stroman (1-0, 4.50 ERA) will go for the Mets against a pitcher that has yet to be determined.

Mets Press Briefing: LAST TIME OUT: Stroman's last start was his first in the majors since September 27, 2019...He earned the Mets' first win of the season, limiting the Phillies to one run on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts...He induced 15 ground balls and allowed only one batter to lift the ball into the air.  WITH THE METS: Stroman is now 5-2 with a 3.56 ERA (26 earned runs/65.2 innings) in his 12 starts with New York...The Mets are 9-3 in his 12 starts since he joined the team on July 28, 2019.

1962

After being rained out the previous night and with some players getting stuck in an elevator, the Mets make their National League debut in St. Louis, losing to the Cardinals at Busch Stadium, 11-4. The defeat will be the first of a record-setting 120 losses the New York expansion team will suffer this season.

1971

Jerry Grote hits a walk-off homer in the 11th inning off Wayne Granger at Shea Stadium. The New York catcher's game-ending round-tripper accounts for the only run scored in the Mets' 1-0 victory over Cincinnati.

2003

In the first of its 'home' games at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Expos rout David Cone and the Mets, 10-0. The Montreal franchise, which is now owned by major league baseball, will play 22 games in the commonwealth this season as a new venue is sought for the poorly-attended Canadian team.

2006

At the home opener at RFK Stadium prior to the hometown team's 7-1 loss to the Mets, Dick Cheney, wearing a red-and-blue Nationals jacket, becomes the eighth sitting vice president to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. After the the veep is greeted with a chorus of loud boos, he bounces the pitch in front of home plate, throwing the ball from directly in front of the pitching mound.

Baseball Reference:

1962 - The New York Mets play their first game and lose, 11 - 4, to the Cardinals in St. Louis. Gil Hodges and Charlie Neal provide bright spots for the Mets, hitting the first two home runs in the new franchise's history.

1963 - Warren Spahn of the Milwaukee Braves becomes the all-time winningest left-handed pitcher in major league history. Spahn's 6 - 1 victory over the New York Mets gives him 328 career wins, moving him ahead of Eddie Plank as the all-time winningest left-hander. Except for Duke Snider's home run, no Mets get past second base.

2001 - Greg Maddux of the Atlanta Braves is almost flawless for seven innings, combining with a pair of relievers to pitch a one-hitter in a 2 - 0 victory over the New York Mets. The Mets wind up with only one runner against Maddux, Mike Remlinger and John Rocker, when Todd Zeile lines a single about a foot beyond second baseman Quilvio Veras's glove with one out in the 2nd inning.

2006: Minor league pitchers Waner Mateo (Mets), Ryan Rafferty (Royals), Ramón Ramirez and Justin Mallett (Reds), are suspended 50 games each by the Commissioner's office for violating baseball's minor league drug program, the first penalties since the sport toughened its rules during the offseason.

2012: Two anniversaries clash in New York, as the Mets celebrate a half century of existence, and Washington Nationals starter Stephen Strasburg the second anniversary of his professional debut. Strasburg has the upper hand, pitching 6 scoreless innings to earn his first win of the year, 4 - 0. His opponent Johan Santana, also coming back from arm surgery, gives up a single run in 5 innings when Mark DeRosa scores on a wild pitch in the 2nd, but it's enough to saddle him with the loss.

2015: Mets reliever Jenrry Mejia is the latest major league player to be suspended for testing positive for a steroid as he is handed an 80-game penalty. He is the fourth pitcher to incur the penalty in a two-week span, following Ervin Santana, David Rollins and Arodys Vizcaino.

2017 - Yoenis Cespedes hits three home runs to lead the Mets to a 14 - 4 win over the Phillies. He is the first player in team history with two three-homer games. His effort is part of a seven-homer night as Lucas Duda goes deep twice, and Asdrubal Cabrera and Travis d'Arnaud hit one out each.

Why does this team always seem to struggle against good pitching? Heck, right now, the Mets are making every pitcher look like he is 10 feet call.

We need smart managing. It was NOT smart to sit Smith in the opener...but it would have been very smart to sit deeply slumping Conforto against a tough lefty and starting Pillar instead. Whoever decided on the line up is not thinking. Pillar hit .308 last year. He can hit. Wake up.

This team cannot long afford to not win deGrom starts and have an expectation of season success.

So, Lindor bunts for a hit (it was an error, but, not the point), then gets thrown out trying to steal a base. So, the Mets just abandoned "small ball" and spent the rest of yesterday swinging for the fences.

No use trying for small hits and "keep the line moving". That's what the Marlins did to add two runs in the ninth.

John, you have a point here.

Bob,

I think Guillorme should play everyday and bat second and Lindor 3rd. Lindor is the best hitter on the team. Guillorme is the prototypical #2 man who can move the runner over. If not Guillorme 2nd - then McNeil.

Fonzie proved how to consistently manufacture runs better than anyone other Mets Manager I ever saw with the possible exception of Hodges. His style of baseball needs to be the team standard.

It took a perfect throw to cut down Lindor. Would have been 2nd and 3rd, none out. Different game. Someday, I guess things will go the Mets' way. Someday.
