As we had on Mack’s Mets, yesterday’s Mets @ Nationals Game was cancelled due to a Nationals player testing positive to COVID. 

Ken Davidoff NY Post: Postponed Mets opener a harsh reminder of ongoing COVID-19 battle. “You can get sold to a big-time billionaire who acquires an All-Star shortstop and turns him into a centimillionaire. You can declare it a new era, a new day, a new franchise. You cannot, however, outmaneuver a pandemic.”

NY Post: Nationals working to get through Opening Day COVID-19 problem. “The number of players on the Nationals testing positive for COVID-19 has risen to three — with a fourth awaiting the results of retesting — wiping out at least their home opener Thursday against the Mets.”


NY Post: If the Mets and Nationals are able to play Saturday — with Jacob deGrom facing fellow multiple-Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer — deGrom also would be lined up to pitch the first game at Citi Field in front of fans since 2019 next Thursday against Miami.

1972

After playing a round of golf in West Palm Beach with his coaches on Easter Sunday, Mets manager Gil Hodges, two days shy of his 48th birthday, suffers a fatal heart attack. The club will name current first base coach and former Yankee skipper Yogi Berra to run the team when the strike-delayed season begins.

1984

For the first time in ten years, the Mets lose on Opening Day, bowing to the Reds, 8-1. The last time the team dropped a season opener was in 1974, when Mike Schmidt hit a two-run walk-off home run off Tug McGraw, giving the Phillies a 5-4 victory over New York at Veterans Stadium.

2003

Todd Zeile homers in his first at-bat as a Yankee, becoming the only major leaguer to hit a home run for ten different teams, surpassing Tommy Davis, who went deep for nine different clubs. In addition to homering with the Bronx Bombers, the infielder has also gone deep for the Cardinals, Cubs, Phillies, Orioles, Dodgers, Marlins, Rangers, Mets, and Rockies.

2010: The injury-ravaged New York Mets round out their roster by making six cuts, sending Ps Nelson Figueroa, Kiko Calero, Bobby Parnell and Elmer Dessens, along with IF Russ Adams and OF Chris Carter, major league veterans all, down to AAA Buffalo. Among those that make it through the day are veteran Frank Catalanotto, a spring training invitee, and 20-year-old P Jenrry Mejia.

Mack’s Blast From The Past  – The Mack Attack - April 2, 2009. Mack had the 2009 Opening Day Roster and noted: “The Mets have no good defensive options at second base. Yes, Luis Castillo is in shape and ready to roll, but the knees are still arthritic. Castillo is the fifth-worst second baseman at minus-20 plays during the 2006-2008 period and getting worse every year.”  The more things change, the more they stay the same.

In order of importance:
- Yankees have a big bullpen problem. They gave away Ottavino for nothing, huh?
- I cannot believe that play by Inglesias in the hole. He was transferring the ball to his throwing hand as he was getting up off the ground!
- I forgot how much I hated Pablo Sandoval until I saw him wearing a Braves uni and hitting a pinch-hit two run homer on an 0-2 pitch.
- That throw to second by Gary Sanchez was very important to that kid, wish him well. The Yankees would have taken a bag of chips for that kid this passed winter.
- The Mariners score six in the eighth inning and win in extras? I have quickly developed an inexplainable dislike for the Mariners in just a couple of seasons.

- Bullpen problem . .that is a good thing, right?
- Iglesias . . the guy is good... Andrelton who?
- Sandoval . . yea, a bomb yesterday (in a losing cause), but the guy is an injury waiting to happen. Prediction: he won't be active on that team by June 1
- Sanchez . . no thoughts
- Mariners . . I certainly don't like the way they handled the Kelenic situation, but they have a very talented group of young players. If they get some pitching, they'll be a good club. My daughter lives in Seattle, so I kinda gotta sorta root for them. (although I am actually pulling for the Angels in that division).

69, I used to always like the Mariners, until the day the Kelenic trade was made official. Then, I hope a meteor hits Jerry DiPoto’s office at Safeco. LOL!

Gus the meteor towards DiPoto will come from the eastern seaboard. It will be trace to Alonso’s bat.

Scary thing about Kelenic was he fanned something like once in 20 PAs. Power and contact.
