B-Mets Finish Strong in Series Opener, 7-2

ERIE, PA – The Binghamton Mets scored seven unanswered runs to defeat the Erie SeaWolves, 7-2, in the series opener on Monday night at Jerry Uht Park. Erie pitcher David Kopp’s throwing error opened the door for the B-Mets’ pivotal four-run seventh inning.

 

With a runner on first and the game tied at two in the seventh, Juan Centeno bounced a potential inning-ending, double-play ball back to the mound. Kopp fielded cleanly, but skipped his throw into center, prolonging the frame.

 

Wilfredo Tovar followed with a dribbler down the third base line. Puello beat the throw home, giving Bingamton the lead. Darrell Ceciliani tacked on with a two-run single to center and the B-Mets plated the final run on a bases-loaded wild pitch from Tyler Stohr.

 

The four-run frame made a winner of Erik Goeddel (1-0), who scattered eight hits, allowed two runs and struck out five in six innings of work in his Double-A debut. The righty stranded five runners, including two in the fifth when the B-Mets trailed by a run. The righty’s only blemish was a two-run double surrendered to James McCann.

 

Kopp’s error spoiled a strong start for Erie’s Victor Larez. The righty allowed one run on two hits over five innings in his first Double-A game. He tossed four no-hit innings before Danny Muno singled to start the fifth.

 

Trailing by two, Muno’s hit sparked the B-Mets comeback. He stole second and scored the B-Mets first run when Cesar Puello blasted a double to left field. Alonzo Harris tied the game in the sixth against Kopp, golfing a 2-2 pitch above the yellow stripe in left for a solo homer.

 

Jack Leathersich and Jeff Walters added three shutout innings of relief. Kopp (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) in 1-2/3 innings on the hill.

 

The B-Mets (4-1) continue their three-game set against the Double-A Tigers Tuesday night at 6:35 PM. RHP Rafael Montero (1-0, 1.59) makes his second start of the year against LHP Kyle Lobstein (1-0, 5.40). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 6:20 PM
