Is there any wisdom to the idea of trading both Ike Davis and Lucas Duda at some point, then signing a FA 1B in the offseason....like maybe Justin Morneau? The team could spend some of those available dollars, actually upgrade -the position AND greatly increase their pool of young talent. I like Davis and feel he is likely here to stay, I'm just thinking out loud "can we do better?"
On a separate note, I was going to write a piece comparing Wheeler's inevitable promotion to Matt Harvey's success and how fans should exercise a little patience with Zack. He's likely going to experience a rough transition and Harvey has set the bar really high. Do you think it's appropriate now or should I wait until Zack gets the call?
Mack - we're trading two players who haven't played an entire season in the majors?
Michael, a trade takes two things.. you need a team willing to give up someone and another team that wants that same person.
Duda and Davis still fall into the untested category and, frankly, IMO, are not subject to trade right now.
Regarding signing Morneau, you have to remember that most free agents (and their agents) don't want to be a Met. They hate the ownership and they don't think Queens is a path to the world series.
I'm afraid the Mets are going to have to do this on their own and lost a big opportunity with J-Up.

To clarify, this was more forward-looking as in at the deadline or next offseason, I wouldn't trade either right now.
My thinking is that there are a number of teams that are hurting in the 1B or DH department as the position is very thin at the moment. If the Mets are holding two young power-hitting 1B I'm betting they could get a decent return. There have been rumors about the Red Sox having serious interest in Ike Davis. Off the top of my head, Boston, Tampa, Colorado, Seattle, Cleveland, Houston, and Pittsburgh could use an upgrade at the position. Milwaukee and Minnesota might have a need depending on what happens with Hart and Morneau.
It's disheartening to think no free agent would sign here, but weren't the Mets in on Michael Bourn? I think it depends on how the roster is shaping up this fall to see what kind of players the Mets can be in the market. If they're looking like a legitimate contender and have money to spend I think they'll be able to sign a player or two.
I'm sure it has become better but a ket FA told me 3 years ago no one wants any part of the Wilpons
Then the deadline becomes all that much more important. If the Mets can't count on signing even one free agent OF they'll have to have enough bait to trade for what they need.
Players that go into FA are usually near the end of their career and have one good contract left.
The ones that never won a ring are not counselled by their agents that the road to the WS goes through Willets Point.
