The Rome Braves concluded the first home stand of 2013 by defeating the Savannah Sand Gnats 5-2 before 3,108 fans at State Mutual Stadium. It was back to back triples in the fifth helping seal the win for Rome. The Braves improves their record to 5-3.
The Sand Gnats struck early in the first inning thanks to an RBI double by Kevin Plawecki to make the score 1-0. The Braves answered back in the bottom of the inning when Carlos Franco singled scoring Josh Elander tying the game 1-1. The Braves took the lead in the second on a fielding error by Phillip Evans with the bases loaded to score Tyler Tewell.
The game was tied again in the fourth when Savannah's Gregory Pron grounded into a double play with the bases loaded, allowing Plawecki to score. Rome would take the lead for good in the fifth when thanks to an RBI triple to Elander and a two RBI triple by Franco, making the score 5-3. Rome's bullpen held Savannah the rest of the way giving Rome the win.
Rome's starter Williams Perez (2-0) gets the victory while Savannah's Gabriel Ynoa (1-1) is tagged with the loss. Shae Simmons gets his fourth save of the season.
