Everybody seems to be in agreement that Mooney will go somewhere in the first or second round.
He is a + defender at short (a position he is projected to remain at) and already shows skills with a bat in his hands.
Toughest decision for him is whether he signs with Duke and comes back in a few years for big bucks as one of the top five picks in the draft.

Duke commitments tend to have the reputation of being tougher to sign. If that proves true in Mooney's case, then make a note on a piece of scrap paper, because he could reemerge on one of these lists in a few years' time. He hits the ball hard, he runs well, and he has the arm for the left side. Proving that he can do it all against better competition than what he faced in a cold-weather state can only help.

A 6-foot, 180-pound shortstop committed to Duke, Mooney is a heady, aggressive player who does a lot of things well on the diamond but might not have a true plus tool. Instead, he has a bag of 50s and 55s and also has solid defensive versatility. A shortstop with a chance to stick at the position, Mooney has also played third base and second base this summer and has the tools to handle all three. He’s an above-average runner with plenty of arm strength for third and the athleticism to handle a middle infield spot. Offensively, Mooney has good pure bat-to-ball skills and looks to make the most of that ability early and often, with an aggressive approach that does lead him to expand the zone at times early in the count. He has a simple setup at the plate with slight bat waggle and an open stance, but quiet hands and enough bat speed to do damage on a variety of pitches. Once on base, Mooney is also an aggressive base run who looks to steal and put pressure on the defense.

24. Atlanta Braves | Alex Mooney, SS, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s | (2/53) Ryan Wrobleski, C, Dallas Baptist
The Braves have had success ahead of expectation for a club with talent throughout their farm system. Mooney, a prep shortstop from Michigan, could really be a big addition to that farm as he is just a flat-out great baseball player. Atlanta took a catcher in Shea Langeliers in the first round of the 2019 MLB Draft and adding Wrobleski to the mix could be interesting for the Braves as he has been a bit of a riser since joining DBU and transferring from NIACC. The tools are not huge, but the skillset and ability to hit, field and throw at a high level are intriguing for both of these Braves draft picks. It would be a pretty risky pick here at the backend of the first round, but the ceiling of Mooney could be well worth the risk and as for Wrobleski, the rise of him in the spring is a gut feel as is reason for taking him this far up the board. -Greg Gerard
Cervino’s Take: Alex Mooney would be the fifth prep shortstop taken in the first round in this situation and he’d also be the first Braves first round pick since Carter Stewart in 2018. The Braves pair Mooney with Ryan Wrobleski who’s got excellent defensive ability behind the dish as he transfers into Dallas Baptist. The Braves would pair Wrobleski with 2019 first-rounder Shea Langeliers and Mooney is a relatively less volatile prep prospect.

robmorrison14's comments: The Cubs are looking like a rebuild candidate waiting to happen. It depends if they are fine with just winning divisions but I don't think the Cubs could do what they did in 2016 with the lineup they have now. They should look to start selling pieces and rebuild the minors like they did, so they have a chance in staying ahead of the curve and winning another title before the century mark.

Super polished defensive middle-infielder with impressive actions and hands on the dirt. One of the players most likely to stick at the position. Mooney has continued to show off the bat this summer, culminating in a PGAA event where he got on base 5 times against the best arms in the country. He's very short to the ball with no wasted movements. It's not a lofty swing, but it doesn't necessarily have to be as Mooney has shown a keen ability to put backspin on the ball. He's an easy plus runner, maybe more and can be an asset on the basepaths. Above average also may be short-selling Mooney. Good approach at the plate and burgeoning pop at the dish suggests he may grow into fringe average power at the next level. Not as much projection in the body as some of the other shortstops in the class, but it's an exciting profile teams will covet.

A prototypical, late-first-round pick in which organizations focus on adding toolsy middle infielders with a surprising floor and jaw-dropping ceiling. Mooney gives you one of the highest floors out of any prep infielder in 2021. Very loud summer on the circuit with a budding plus hit tool and showing easy gap power. Fundamentally sound at shortstop, with long term potential there due to a plus glove and arm. There’s five-tool potential here, with plenty of room to grow as a professional.

6-foot-1, 175 pounds. Athletic frame with compact strength in the upper half. Solid feel to hit, lacks some in the power department. Bat projects as average. Spectacular defender that is going to stick at shortstop moving forward. Soft hands, clean funnels, fields in rhythm, moves extremely well on the dirt. All the defensive actions you want to see out of a big league shortstop.

Alex Mooney, SS, Canes National/Mets Scout Team
Mooney performed steadily all summer and really took off offensively in the fall, winning the Perfect Game All-American Classic MVP and having a strong WWBA. He walked a ton and hit for extra base power while playing an excellent middle infield, and it would be hard to think of anything else he could have done throughout the circuit to further raise his draft stock, which is now comfortably in the first round.
Alex Mooney – SS: A leadoff type with some pop, and base stealing ability to stick at a premium position, Mooney has climbed the ranks pretty heavily the past month (had him around 25-30 range) and a half with recent showings at events and eventually on the big stage at the PG All-American Classic where he took home the games MVP. The bat has consistently shown up this summer against some strong pitching with some pop as well. Will settle in as a Hit (50) over Power (45) guy. When you pair that with a Plus Runner, Defender, and Arm at the SS position, you’re talking about a pretty well-rounded player and consistent player.
