He has a five pitch arsenal that includes a 97 fastball and a ++ slider.
What he needs to do this year is to better mix these pitches so batters miss more balls.

Supremely athletic starter with the mold of a smart, heady competitor -- just the type the Brewers organization covets. Massey has added 40 pounds of muscle since arriving to campus, a large chunk of which was added over the shutdown. The result is an arm now popping 97 mph. He features two fastball variants, a slider, curveball, and a changeup, the latter of which Massey describes as his wipeout pitch. For our money, the slider may be plus as well. It's a starters profile that could bolster a Brewers system short on arm talent. If Massey comes out throwing strikes in 2021, his body and arsenal are a good bet to intrigue teams in the first round.

A lanky, 6-foot-5, 180-pound righthander with a body you can dream on, Massey has shown some interesting stuff but has yet to put everything together at Minnesota. This spring he pitched with a fastball that averaged around 94 mph and also showed a 50-grade slider. His curveball and changeup are both distant tertiary weapons which are solidly below average right now. While he’s struck out batters at a high rate (11.2 per nine) throughout his collegiate career, Massey has struggled to throw strikes. He’s walked 34 batters in 44.1 innings (6.9 per nine), largely as a reliever, leading most scouts to think he’ll be pitching out of the bullpen in pro ball as well. With a solid fastball/slider combination, Massey has the stuff that could profile out of the pen if he adds physicality to his frame and will need to improve his control and develop a solid third pitch to project as a starter

The Diamondbacks land arguably the top prep prospect in the class with Brady House, an ultra-physical shortstop who showed particularly well on both sides of the ball as the circuit came to a close in the fall. At 6-foot-3, 210 pounds there’s ample strength to his frame, allowing him to whip the barrel through the zone with big strength at impact. Any while some may be quick to point to a slide over to third base, the combination of athleticism, body control and a plus arm leave plenty of optimism for him to stick up the middle. Like House, Massey is relatively young for the class and has seen his stock soar since arriving in Minnesota though there’s reason to believe he hasn’t reached his ultimate ceiling. Standing 6-foot-5, 205 pounds, Massey generates easy velocity given his plus arm speed, reaching the mid-90s while showing the potential for a plus slider as well. -Jheremy Brown
Cervino’s Take: The Diamondbacks go with massive upside in their first two picks in potentially the top prep prospect in Winder-Barrow’s Brady House and young-for-the-grade right-hander out of Minnesota in JP Massey. House capped off the year with a scorching hot fall and there’s real All-Star potential should he put it all together while Massey has continued to make strides given the arm talent, stuff, and athleticism. Pairing these two makes for a particularly enticing duo to kick off what would be an exciting draft.

Massey has tacked on almost 30 pounds since the 2019 season, now weight in at 210 pounds. That, coupled with a 6-foot-5 frame, reminds some of a body reminiscent of Indians prospect Triston McKenzie. A loose, athletic delivery, Massey delivers from a three quarters release point, mixing a mid-90s fastball, a sharp slider in the low-80s, and an infrequently used changeup. Massey is one of the darkhorses for huge helium in the 2021 class. Folks from within the Minnesota program actually believe the slider may be as good as 2020 no. 3 overall pick Max Meyer.

Massey is one of my favorite right handed college arms due to the insane extension he gets. At 6.9 feet, Massey gets himself closer to the plate than almost anyone else available in this draft class, making his low 90s fastball appear to play mid 90s. Massey also throws a change and curveball, the latter of the two being his best out pitch.
He is a guy that fits the idea of the low approach angle really well, and with further room to fill out, I’d expect to see him consistently touching 95 in the next couple of years (he tops out 94–95 now). Massey has a very repeatable delivery, sinking into his glutes really well on his drive. Arm speed is consistent, and his clean mechanics leave me worry free in regards to stress related arm injuries (from a mechanical standpoint).
He is a solid pick for the mid second round, and is one to follow in regards to development heading into 2021 (we could see him shoot up).

Tall and fall delivery with a high leg kick. Works in line with home plate, smooth rhythm with an athletic finish. Three pitch feel for strikes. Fastball has slight running action at 84-85 topping out at 86 mph. Curveball has 11-5 shape with sharp breaking action at 68-69 mph. Maintains fastball arm speed on changeup with fading action at 73-75 mph. One of the most projectable arms in the Illinois 2018 class.
10.16.16 - Highly projectable 6-foot-2, 155-pound right-handed pitcher with a thin, lanky frame. Works from a high ¾ arm angle with a loose, quick arm action. Tall and fall, online delivery with some effort. Athletic finish with good balance throughout delivery. Fastball flashed arm side running at 82-83 mph for strikes. Curveball has 11-5 shape with sharp breaking action at 66-69 mph. Maintains fastball arm speed on changeup. Changeup has arm side running with good feel at 71-73 mph for strikes.
