B-Mets Game Notes

LAST GAME:

Junichi Tazawa was masterful through six innings
in helping the Sea Dogs to a 4-3 win over the B-Mets.
Tazawa gave up just one run on six hits, striking out three.
Binghamton pounded out 12 hits in the losing effort including
two three-hit performances from the middle infield. Jonathan
Malo went 3-5 with a double and an RBI, while Ruben Tejada
went a perfect 3-3 finishing a home run short of the cycle with
a walk. Fernando Nieve started for the B-Mets going a seasonhigh
4.1 innings giving up three runs to take the loss. Carl
Loadenthal and Shawn Bowman also had two-hit performances
to aid the offensive attack. T.J. Large saved the game
by getting a come-backer off the bat of pinch-hitter Josh Thole
with the tying run at second.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP:

LHP Mike Antonini will make
his team-best sixth start of the season tonight. Last time out,
Antonini got roughed up for five runs in the first inning last
Saturday and lasted just four innings taking the loss against
New Hampshire. The four inning outing was his shortest of the
season and the six runs he allowed were also a season high.
For the year, he is 3-1 with a 5.84 ERA. Antonini saw time at
three different levels last season, rising from Savannah (Low-
A) to St. Lucie (High-A) before finishing with Binghamton. In all,
he made 28 starts, including 8 for the B-Mets. Antonini was
the Mets’ 18th round selection in 2007 out of Georgia College
& State University.

Portland will toss RHP Blake Maxwell at Binghamton in the
finale of the four-game set. Maxwell’s last start came May 2 at
Connecticut when he gave up four runs in a season-best 5.1
innings to take the loss. He started April 17 against the BMets
at NYSEG Stadium and lasted just three innings giving
up two runs. For the year, Maxwell carries an 0-1 record with
an 8.59 ERA. He spent all of 2008 with Lancaster (High-A)
making 37 appearances including 15 starts with a 3.32 ERA
in 133 innings. He was taken in the 40th round of the 2005
draft by the Red Sox out of Methodist College.

MALO MASHIN’:

Jonathan Malo has been right at home in a BMets
uniform so far in 2009. He has reached base in all nine
of his starts with Binghamton, including hits in seven of nine.
He had first three-hit day of the season yesterday going 3-5
with a double. Batting in the two spot of the order, Malo has
gotten on base with a .333 (11-33) average and has scored
10 runs.

RED HOT TEJADA:

B-Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada extended
his on-base streak to 16 games yesterday with a perfect 3-3
day, finishing a home run short of the cycle. He has raised his
batting average from .143 to .276 by hitting in 12 of 15.
