Thoughts On Lucy

St. Lucie won Tuesday, 5-1 against Palm Beach, but that’s not the story.

1B Ike Davis continues to turnaround what has been a pretty bad Mets career so far. His batting average is now up to .306, though he does continue to lack the pop (only 1 HR, 6 RBIs) once projected when the Mets drafted him in the first round.

I wasn’t a big fan of his or Reese Havens pick, and both looked from hunger until around 30 days ago, but I have to say I’m encouraged at what has happened to both of theme so far this season.

The downside remains that Ike doesn’t pop and Havens can’t field (10 errors in 25 games) in the field.

But, for now, both 1st round picks look better.

If I told you before the season started that Brad Holt would have the highest ERA in the rotation… well, you know the drill…

With the promotion of C Ralph Henriquez (and his going 3-4 in the first game), look for the Mets to start giving up on big bonus baby Francisco Pena (.229, 1HR, 5RBIs).

Hats off to OF Carlos Guzman, for leading the team in hitting through April. Guzman has calmed down a little (.211 in May), but he’s still hitting .284 for the season, more than fellow outfielders Kirk Nieuwenhuis (.245), and Brahiam Maldonado (.237).

Looks like RP Nick Carr has bounced back from a miserable 2008 (3-12, 5.22 in 22 games, 21 starts). Carr now comes strictly out of the pen and his 99 heater so far, in 6 appearances, has stats of 1-0, 1.42, and 22Ks in 19.0 IP.
