Carlos Beltran:
NYT - He actually said he wanted to “hit somebody” in response to Utley’s hard slide from Friday, and he almost did when he slid hard into second base Saturday. When has he ever said something like that during his years with the Mets? Whether he made contact or not, Beltran did break up the double play and seemed to ignite his team, which went on to score five runs in that inning. Utley, of course, made the aggressive body slide into Ruben Tejada on Friday night that the Mets took offense to, saying it was too late and too dangerous. David Wright said the Mets would reevaluate how they slid into second. So in the seventh inning on Saturday Beltran slid hard through second base, although Utley and shortstop Wilson Valdez easily got out of the way.
Jordany Valdespin:
Sept 2010 from: - NYFS - When you watch him in person you can’t help but get excited about his upside potential. He looks like he has all the physical tools to be a dynamic middle infielder. He’s got good pop, very good speed, solid range and arm strength. But he’s also raw and undisciplined. His discipline problems plaque him not only on the field but off the field as well. Although these issues seem to not have surfaced as much this season; he has in the past been reprimanded, demoted, suspended several times by the club. On the field he put together a solid year at St. Lucie but struggled in his promotion to AA. At 22 years old, he is poised to have a good year in Bingo next year. He’s the type of player that really can begin to excel as he begins to mature both physically and mentally.
Howard Johnson:
HBT - Of the Mets’ current coaches, HoJo is the only one who will be considered, and even that figures to be passing interest. (I don’t think that base coach Chip Hale will receive a look.) Frankly, I’ve never understood what the Mets see in Johnson as a managerial candidate. As a player, he was blessed with an athletic combination of speed and power, but was not strong in the fundamentals and was never regarded as a thinking man‘s ballplayer. HoJo’s youth and name value as an ex-Met standout will help him in some circles, but he’s had a checkered career as a minor league coach, including a suspension at Double-A Binghamton, and in the majors, where the 2010 Mets have flailed badly under his leadership as hitting coach. Perhaps Johnson will fool me, but I’d proceed with caution before offering him the managerial reins. I think the Mets will take the same approach.
Mike Pelfrey:
mlb - As it stands, Mike Pelfrey will remain under Mets control until 2014. He'd like to stick around even longer than that. "I would be interested," Pelfrey said about the possibility of a contract extension. "They'd have to bring it up, but I'm sure we'll explore it. I'm definitely open to it." To date, the Mets have not discussed the possibility of a long-term extension with Pelfrey, who is eligible for arbitration for the first time this offseason.
Ollie in Mexico:
metsguide - Oliver Perez has asked the Mets for permission to play winter ball in Mexico and the front office is discussing the idea. Perez will probably be allowed to play but the Mets are looking into the legal ramifications. There are liability issues to work out, such as responsibility in the event of an injury. "He is really eager to work and come back strong next year," the source said.
