From Tony from VT.:
What will Ike Davis become? We have seen him for a year he has great instincts in the field (Keith does love to nit pick about everything he does not do perfectly at first base) and has plus raw power, too many k's, but also a good amount of walks. Will 25 HR 90 RBI 350 OBP be enough to keep him at first base with all the big names available. Also, I have heard that in College when not pitching he played a great Right Field. What do you know about his Right Field Play if anything? - Best, Tony from CT
Tough question.
First of all, let's go back to March 15th when I was at spring training and everyone was trying to figure out who was going to play first base for the Mets. I took a bunch of pictures of the three candidates, Daniel Murphy, Chris Carter, and Mike Jacobs. In fact, here is one of those pictures:
So, let's first all ask ourselves... would we be happy in 2010 with one of these three guys shown above hitting .262 with 18-HR and 69-RBIs?
Yes to Jacobs... hell, yes to Carter... and maybe to Murphy.
Now, throw in the equation that Davis is only 23-years old, wasn't suppose to be ready to handle this kind of pressure yet, and did not have the advantage of Carlos Beltran, Jason Bay, and David Wright hitting at their best all season around them, thus giving Davis better pitches to hit.
Trust me, if the guy hitting before you is averaging over 30 home runs a game, and the guy behind you is averaging more, you are going to get more pitches you can hit out of the park.
I have no idea what Davis will become. Remember, I originally said this was a bad draft pick. I think it's safe to say he's a 25-HR, 85-RBI threat, but we have to see more than two hot streaks, one early in the season when no pitchers in the league had ever seen him before, and the current one when it doesn't count.
Is a 25-HR, 85-RBI, .275-BA Mets first baseman enough?
Well, it is if Bay and Beltran do their job they're being paid well for.
Mack
