5 Mets Arrivals From the D.R

This is the toughest crap shoot every off-season. You just don’t know who is getting a visa, but a good sign is when a player had a wonderful season and it is the second year he has played for the DSL team. These five look to be this year’s favorites to play summer for either the GCL Mets or Kingsport:

SP Carlos Gomez – Yes, there is a Carlos Gomez in the Mets organization. Gomez pitched for the now defunct VSL Mets in 2009 (0-0, 6.11 in 9 games), and graduated to the DSL Met2 team last season. He converted to a starter and shined: 7-2, 1.47, but only 46-Ks in 73.1-IP. He will turn 19 in March 2011 and there’s a good chance he will come north to the GCL team in the spring.

OF Eudy Pina – Pina was the hitting star for the DSL1 Mets in 2010. Very impressive stats: .310/.387/.435/.822 in 248-AB, 3-HR, 45-RBIs. That was good enough for the 13th top BA in the league, and 5th in RBIs. Only 3-E in CF. Turns 20 in April. Played two seasons for the DSL team so this kid is definitely coming north.

SP Rainey Lara – Lara is a 6-4 RHP (he he…) out of Bani, Dominican Republic, who pitched 2010 for the DSL2 team… 4-2, 1.97, 14-G, 12-Starts, 1-SV, 51-K, 13-BB, 64.0-IP. It was his first season with the Mets , so there is a chance that the 19-year old will be held back.

CL Victor Peralta – Peralta has now pitched three years for the DSL and VSL Mets, so there seems to be very little doubt that he will be coming stateside in 2011. He is a relief pitcher that was used ineffectively as a starter by the 2009 Venezuelan team; however, he put up impressive relief stats for the D.R. team, both in 2008 (4-3, 3.45, 20-G, 30-K, 31.1-IP) and 2010 (3-0, 2.64, 24-G, 43-K, 30.2-IP). The 5-11 lefty will begin the season as a 21-year old.

SP/RP Miller Diaz – Diaz has pitched two years in the Carribean. In 2009, he went 2-2, 5.02, in 11-G, 2-starts for the VSL Mets, transferred to the DSL Mets in 2010 and posted stats of 4-4, 2.05, 14-G, 9-starts, 42-K, 48.1-IP, 14-BB. I see the 6-1 righty in the pen, but he culd easily start off 2011 in the GCL mets rotation.
