Cutnpaste: - Jaffe on Terry, Reyes to Reds, Sandy on Free Agents, BA on Beato, and Jesus Flores

Brian Costa
 Jaffe on Terry:

Terry Collins—really? Terry Collins? I doubt I was the only person to have that reaction when the Mets named Collins as their new skipper last month. Sure Collins had a winning record in his career after two previous stints managing the Astros and Angels, but it seemed like a very unexpected blast from the past. He last managed a MLB game in 1999 and frankly hasn't been thought about much since then. -

 Reyes to Reds:

Several insiders have reported that the Reds have discussed what it would take to land Jose Reyes from the Mets. To this point, I am unsure how far the talks have progressed and whether the talks are still going on. However, a deal for Reyes would make sense for both teams. The Reds need a leadoff hitter and could look to upgrade over Paul Janish at shortstop. The Mets, on the other hand, are looking for pitching and some depth for their depleted minor league system -

Sandy on Free Agents:

"Were we in that market and not able to sign players after competing for them, there might be a level of frustration," Alderson said. "But given what we expected coming in and where we are and where we expect to be going into spring training - given the level of our payroll currently - there's not real frustration on my part. But it also underscores the desirability of being in the market every year, which I think is our ultimate goal." - newsday.

BA on Beato:

The Mets club originally nabbed Beato out of a New York high school during the 2005 draft but was unable to come to terms with him. He attended junior college and was then picked up by Baltimore in the 2006 draft. He signed for $1 million. Beato's career was slowed by command issues, although he posted OK control numbers, including a walk rate of 2.87 BB/9 in 2010 at double-A. He was moved to the bullpen full-time this past year and flourished thanks to a more consistent fastball - both in terms of command and velocity. I have to admit that I was a little confused by Baltimore's approach to compiling its 40-man roster for the off-season. The club has one of the worst minor league organizations in terms of depth and it left three quality players unprotected - Beato, Ryan Adams, and Wynn Pelzer; all three could arguably show up as members of the organization's Top 15 prospects -

Jesus Flores:

Magallanes Navegantes (23-24) 1-8 - Magallanes has struggled, going from first place to below .500. Jesus Flores is hot, hitting .360. He hit his first homerun and had a multiple hit streak of four in five games. myworldofbaseball
