Second base shares similar traits with first base.

The Mets are top heavy with talent, led by Ruben Tejada. There’s a good chance, if Jose Reyes is resigned, that Tejada will become the starting second baseman for the next 3-5 years, but there is even more good news. Reese Havens, if he stays healthy, is projected to take that job away by the beginning of the 2013 season. Either way, the Mets may not be looking for their “next” second baseman until after 2015 or more.

Past Tejada and Havens, there’s Danny Muno, who led the NY-Penn League in BA this season, but we’ve seen this kind of stat many times before from 21+ aged college kids playing rookie ball (last one: Rylan Sandoval). Muno will get his first full season test next spring.

The rest are a bunch of organizational players and kids that have so far underperformed. Yucarybert De La Cruz has showed some promise and will hopefully chance his first name as he progresses.

The old “big-market” Mets that I missed would have paid Dan Uggla a year longer than anyone else and we wouldn’t be wondering here, but my guess is fans, in the long run, will be very happy with either Tejada or Havens for the next 3-4 seasons. That being said, the system currently has little depth here and I would look for SS prospect Phillip Evans to move over to second soon and give Muno some future competition.

Probably cuts/exiting players: Hernandez, Coronado, Figueroa

Probable starters: AAA: Havens, AA: Sandoval, A+: Tovar, A: Muno

Rating: B

If Reyes is kept, add Valdespin to the list
