Hot Stove: - Grady Sizemore, Jonathan Broxton, Detroit Tigers, Martin Prado, Michael Cuddyer

Grady Sizemore: .224 BA, .706 OPS, 10 HR, 32 RBI  Injuries have robbed Sizemore of his effectiveness, especially in the last two seasons. His last good season was 2008 (.268, 33 HR, 90 RBI, .876 OPS). Since then, he has batted .234 with 28 home runs and 109 RBI in the last thee seasons. That was why the Indians declined his $8.5 million option. Though he is a center fielder, he could become a right fielder, especially if the Red Sox sign him. If he remains in center field, someone like the Marlins could take a chance since they plan on raising payroll. http://www.metro.us/newyork/sports/article/1019347--mlb-free-agency-fire-up-the-hot-stove

After three solid years as a late inning reliever in which he compiled 19 saves, he became the closer in 2009 and had a very solid year.  He produced 36 saves with a 2.61 ERA, striking out 114 in 76 innings and only walking 29, earning himself an All-Star appearance. 2010 started in similar fashion, in the first half he had 19 saves in 39 games ( 35 GF ) with a 2.11 ERA and earned his second straight All-Star appearance.  In the first half he SO 55 while only walking 7 in 38.1 innings but in the second half as he struggled with injuries he only had three saves and walked 21 in 24 innings while only striking out 18. Jonathan Broxton lost almost the entire 2011 season with elbow tightness, after numerous setbacks he would eventually have what was called minor elbow surgery in Sept. and his agent says he'll be ready for spring training.  He only made 14 appearances, all early in the season in which he produced 7 saves and an ERA of 5.68. http://www.metsfever.com/2011/11/broxton-why-is-27-yo-closer-willing-to.html

Based on the above, it looks as if the Tigers would have plenty of money to spend in 2012. Unfortunately, that’s not the case.  Verlander’s salary jumps up from $13M to $20M, and the Tigers owe $9M in deferred salary (including $2M to Pudge Rodriguez, and $1.5M to Gary Sheffield…remember him?).  Further, Scherzer, Young, Coke and Kelly are all arb eligible, which means that they’ll make a good deal more this season than they made in 2011.  Conservatively, if each of those guys make $3M next year, that puts payroll at $94M (I’m using Cots) that puts the roster at 14, which means that the Tigers will have 11 players to go.  A lot of these guys are still under their rookie contracts (Boesch, Perry, Avila, Schlereth, Al Al etc.) so they won’t be too expensive, but unless Illitch plans to spend significantly more next year, don’t expect any big off-season splashes. http://www.detroittigersweblog.com/2011/11/hot-stove-talk-part-1

The Braves have swung wide open their doors to trade, and Colorado has reportedly contacted them about Martin Prado. The Rockies scouted Prado extensively last season and view him as a starting second baseman who could occupy a run-producing spot in the lineup. The clubs have not yet exchanged names, but are expected to keep the lines of communication open. Atlanta is seeking outfield help, willing to consider moving Prado rather than use him in left field. The Rockies have outfield depth to start trade talks. Seth Smith could fit in a platoon for the Braves, and Charlie Blackmon, a former star at Georgia Tech, might satisfy the Braves" desire to get a center fielder of the future if they are unable to re-sign Michael Bourn. http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/317112-rockies-start-talks-with-braves-for-prado#ixzz1dP3jNNeN

Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports that the Red Sox held preliminary discussions with the agents for free agent Michael Cuddyer earlier this week. The Sox are also after free agent Grady Sizemore, but they're not going to commit to anyone until they attempt to determine the market for David Ortiz. As for Cuddyer, he also appears to be at the top of the free agent wish list of the Phillies, and other teams are sure to get involved, as well. The 32-year-old is looking for a three-year deal. http://www.rotoworld.com/headlines/mlb/345132/baseball-headlines?r=1
