The Implications of Jose Reyes Going To South Beach
Who is this unknown person informing you about the Mets? As my brother previously introduced himself, I am Prince's brother, Sadiq. Enough about me, let's move on to Jose Reyes. Never before, has the future of our franchise depended on the decision of one player. But, the truth is that the Mets will have their fair share of competition for attaining the services of the shortstop. The Brewers, Marlins, Giants, Nationals, Tigers, Phillies, Angels, and the Mets are all teams that could all be in the hunt for Jose Reyes. With every day passing, it seems that the Mets are losing momentum to sign their star shortstop. With money problems, Sandy and the Mets seem reluctant to give Reyes more than four years. Today, According to SI.com’s Jon Heyman, one GM told him a fair price for Jose Reyes would be $100 million for five years. And, acccording to Jon Harper of the Daily News, the Marlins plan to offer Jose Reyes a three-year deal at a high annual average, presumably more than $20 million a year. The Brewers are said to be bidding for Reyes knowing that they can't give Prince Fielder a $200 million contract. So as we speak, Jose Reyes is touring the New Marlins stadium and the beaches of Miami with the owners of the Marlins. Not to mention, that Hanley Ramirez and Jose Reyes are best of friends, and the godfathers of each others children.
The Marlins would be the worst landing place for Reyes for the Mets. If the Marlins are indeed serious about spending money this offseason, and sign Reyes; the Mets would only receive the Marlins' second round pick and a pick in the 1A compensation round. Because the Marlins have a top 15 protected pick, the Mets would not receive another first round pick. Since the Mets decided to keep Reyes during the trade deadline, the compensation picks are really important for the Mets and their farm system. Secondly, we would have to face Reyes in our own division 18 times a year. Mets fans would feel awful seeing Reyes motor the bases in Citi Field for the other team. Maybe it would worth it to give Reyes whatever he wants to avoid this tragedy. Trust me, the sight of Reyes in a Miami Marlins uniform and hat will not be pretty.

Agreed 100% Sadiq. Having Reyes sign in Miami would not be an ideal situation. However the difference in whether we get a 1st or a 2nd round is not as big to me as some people make it unless the 2012 draft class is expected to be weak (which from the looks of it, its at least average). Top Talent can be found throughout the early rounds as long as your willing to buy them out of their commitments (aka Philip Evans)
I love prospects...
but the Johan Santana deal shows what can happen when you trade "five top prospects"
I am so sick of everybody writing about Jose, and I'm currently on a "Jose embargo" until what happens happens...
two stone cold locks I can tell you...
1. no one gets Jose without forking over at least $100mil
2. anything they get from the 2 picks they would receive as compensation... will prove out to be LESS than having Reyes in their lineup
