Jeurys Familia, Jefry Marte, David Wright, Conan O’Brien, Comp Picks

10-25-11: - http://www.minorleaguerundown.com/2011/10/25/2011-top-20-new-york-mets-prospects  - 2011 Top 20 New York Mets Prospects - 5.Jeurys Familia, RHP (High Class A, AA): The raw potential has always been there, and it seems as if it’s become a little more refined in 2011 (2.32 FIP at High A, 3.96 FIP at AA). Familia’s walk rate still needs work (3.13/9 IP overall, 3.59 at AA), but you have to like his improvement from the 5.50/9 IP mark of 2010. It was a welcome sign to see his high K rate stay intact, even bumping back up to his A ball levels upon a promotion to AA (up to 9.86/9 IP). Familia is largely a fly ball guy, so he’ll have to keep the strong command in check once he receives his next promotion.

http://www.metstoday.com/7142/mets-minors/a-look-into-the-future-top-3b-prospects  - Jefry Marte is currently playing in the Arizona Fall League, one of the prestigious off-season leagues for top prospects, for the Peoria Javelinas. In 13 games, he’s hitting .333 with 3 homeruns and 14 RBI. I really do not like to consider these stats as anything because the Arizona air makes the AFL a hitter-dominated league. But it’s a sign of promise and it’s definitely a positive for Marte to get more reps. It’s hard to predict where Marte will fall in 2012. The Mets are obviously aggressive with him, hence Marte playing in the AFL. Should he repeat a year in St. Lucie? Or should they push him on the fast track and let him find his way? My guess is St. Lucie, so he gets more comfortable — like Rodriguez repeating in Savannah. But as a Mets fan, I look forward to watching both Rodriguez and Marte battle it out throughout the minors.

In my few months covering the New York Mets for Rant Sports, there has been one thing that I’ve been pretty vocal about over the past several months: If the New York Mets let Jose Reyes walk (which they should), they need to trade David Wright as well. Buster Olney feels the same way. An Insider account is required, but Olney basically just speaks common sense. The New York Mets are not going to compete for championships over the next few seasons and by the time they do, David Wright probably won’t be there anyway. Why not move him now when several teams are in need of a third baseman and a solid return can be obtained? I’ve discussed several teams and several prospects the New York Mets could potentially target to further bolster their improving farm system. The Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners and Colorado Rockies could each be solid fits for David Wright and each have a young player or two that could interest Sandy Alderson and the New York Mets. http://www.rantsports.com/new-york-mets/2011/11/12/buster-olney-the-new-york-mets-should-trade-david-wright-now

Talk-show host Conan O'Brien was intrigued to hear this week that the New York Mets are planning to move in the outfield walls at Citi Field in the hopes of increasing the number of home runs they hit at the ballpark. Noted O'Brien: "Call me old-fashioned, but isn't that what steroids are for?" ... The last word this week goes to Laura Posada, whose husband, Jorge, believes his career with the New York Yankees is over. In fact, the veteran catcher thinks he may be done in the majors - but Laura isn't so sure. As she told The Associated Press: "I think after he stays home a few more months and he realizes how hard it is to stay home with the kids, I think he's going to pay a team to have him play."  http://www.leaderpost.com/sports/Mets+want+start+swinging+fences/5700151/story.html#ixzz1dVppUlFK

If the Mets could land Zack Wheeler from the Giants – whom Baseball America has named as the Mets’ top prospect – in exchange for Carlos Beltran, what could they have gotten for Reyes? Certainly more, and maybe much more. Instead, they are left to hope for draft picks. Let’s be clear, building through the draft in Major League Baseball is nothing as it is in the NBA or NFL. Other than the occasional can’t-miss prospect like Stephen Strasburg or Bryce Harper, there are few sure things. It takes plenty of time to see the results, and a cheap price tag is about the only lure. There is no bundling of picks to trade up – and no trading of picks at all.  http://www.northjersey.com/sports/pro_sports/baseball/133761808_The_downside_to_Mets__rebuilding_plan.html
