Mack’s 25-man: SP5 Dillon Gee

It’s easy to write about guys like Dillon Gee. No one gave him any shot to make this team and all he does is go out and lead the team in wins. Having Gee and Josh Thole as your battery is like picking up two kids from your school yard and telling people someday they’re going to pitch and catch for Rice. Just never gonna happen.

Dylan gets one more year to prove his value before the kiddies arrive. Hell, some may arrive by the all-star break. Either way, he will need to repeat what he did the first half of 2011, for the entire 2012 season.

Gee throws four almost-plus pitches, but he mixes them up like a… well, like a pro. The only pitcher that seems to have a guaranteed slot in the 2013 rotation is Johan Santana ($25.5mil). You have to assume they will pitch him if they are going to pay him that kind of money (R.A. Dickey has a $300K buyout).

My guess is Jon Niese could still be around, thus leaving three slots for Gee, a re-signed Dickey, Jeurys Familia, Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler, Darin Gorski, Collin McHugh, Chris Schwinden, Dylan Owen, and who knows who else.

Like I said, Dylan’s 2013 value will be dependent upon what he does in 2012, and, trust me, throwing heat isn’t the only way you earn a rotation slot in professional baseball. Just go ask two guys named Glavine and Maddox.

That’s 13 down, 12 to go.

I think Gee definitely has the edge for the #5 spot but Schwinden could have the better spring and sneak in there too. I'm actually interested to see Colin McHugh this Spring. He has similar makeup to Gee and Schwinden but slightly elevated stuff. Spring Training could be A LOT of fun for Met fans who follow the farm.

Off-the-wall thought, Mack. Would anyone consider RAD for closer? His 1st time thru the order stats (2.55ERA/1.17WHIP) reasonably compare to Heath Bell’s 2.15/1.16 and arguably better that K-Rods 2.54/1.31.

Yeah, other than Hoyt Whilhelm…

Plave:

welcome back...

I agree on Schwinden, though Gee will get the "home town discount" for what he has done last year...

McHugh has had a rough fall ball... he should have stayed home in Atlanta and rested...

Hobie:

I've never heard anything like that about him.

He's a very importat cog in the 2012 rotation and probably has no future as a Met past that.

The new management is committed to the kiddies, starting with Familia after the 2012 all-star break

Im not so sure about your take on Dickey Mack.

We've seen how knuckleballer can have long careers due to the minimal effort and strain needed. And it seems like Dickey just started the peak of his knuckleballing career in 2010. He can be a great role model/leader for Generation 2K when they get up to the Majors.
