Night Moves: - Mets Catching, Lary Bowa on Mark Buehle, Met Deal Hell

http://www.metsblog.com/2011/12/06/mets-not-looking-to-add-a-free-agent-catcher - Rather than pursue a righty-hitting free-agent catcher, the Mets have decided to handle that position from within and “use the money that might be devoted to that position to add to the pot available for pitching,” according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.

Look, this makes sense to me, especially since there wasn’t that many decent catchers out there. Still, the Mets have to address this position some day if they want to compete in a division that is beginning to become quite a talented one. Right now, the Mets have catchers that only hit a little and only field a little. You have to have at least one, right? We all turned our back when Mike Piazza was run on because we knew he had the bat. Josh Thole is a streaky scrappy hitter, which is nice, but this team just replaced the NL batting champion with another streaky scrappy hitter. Step up to the plate and deal off one of your pitching prospects for either Deven Mesoraco or Yasmani Grandal. It’s going to cost you more than Jeurys Familia, but it’s a move that’s needed.

Larry Bowa on MLB-TV after hearing that the Mets were interested in Mark Buehle:  “Let me ask you, if this is your last contract, do you sign with the Mets?”

How many years have I been saying this? Actually, it was what a free agent said to me after signing with another team. Terry Collins put things like this better a few nights ago: “you’re going to be rich wherever you go, now it’s just up to where you want to finish your career.” Most veterans want the one thing they haven’t gotten their hands on; a ring. And, right now, in 1992, that ring has no idea where Queens is.

Mets trade Angel Pagan for Ramon Ramirez and Andres Torres… sign Jon Rauch… and sign Frankie Frank… all while I take a nap.

I don’t know where to start on this one, so I’m not. I’ve got an email out to the other writers here and we’ll have a “Mack and Company” post up sometime today on all these moves tonight.

Mack, don't take this the wrong way, but maybe if you go take another nap, they'll trade for a catcher. Of course, you'll probably just be dreaming.

don't be surprised that the Rule 5 objective will be to replace Mike Nickeas

I was thinking that aswell. Easier to hold someone all year in a backup role.
