I have no problem with this if the results are obtaining one or two players that can play with the Matt Harvey’s of this organization in 2012, rather than, let’s say, Jon Rauch. We all know the Mets are rebuilding. Don’t be fooled by all the relief pitchers signed. Most teams do this every year. Let’s set the table:
· Forget about Bernie Madoff. Operationally, this team needs to operate in the $75mil range to turn around their revenue bleeding
· The Mets brass truly feel that their future SP1-3 will be Harvey, Zack Wheeler, and Jeurys Familia. They also know that all three will be ready by opening day 2014.
· David Wright might be untradeable today, but he does not represent the future of this team. The Mets will not duplicate the Jose Reyes debacle of not trading him during next season. A Wright trade will get the Mets another Wheeler caliber type prospect, possibly the long term catcher that the team needs.
· The Ike Davis scare tonight was just that and Davis is going nowhere. He is the future first baseman for this franchise through the decade.
· Players like Ruben Tejada, Lucas Duda, and Daniel Murphy will determine their 2014 value after the 2012 season.
· Other players in the system will also graduate between opening day 2012 and 2014. Robert Carson and Josh Edgin should be in the Mets pen then. Jenrry Mejia will either be the SP4 or the closer. Reese Havens will take over at second base, moving Daniel Murphy over to third. And Matt den Dekker and Kirk Nieuwenhuis will roam the Flushing outfield.
· Players like Johan Santana, Jason Bay, Jon Niese, R.A. Dickey, Bobby Parnell, and Josh Thole fall into the same category as Wright. They are future trade bait for prospects, or players that are simply playing out their contract.
· Realistically, the Mets have lost no one so far this season. Carlos Beltran, Francisco Rodriguez and Jose Reyes never were part of the future plans for the Mets. Reyes would have been if the team was operating differently, but the 2012 version of the Mets could not compete with teams like the Marlins.
· The only true gain was Wheeler. The rest of the guys signed on Tuesday night are simply short term solutions during this transition period.

Sort of the way that Frank Cashen operated in the early 80s when he took over. Use the draft and trade the pieces that you currently have for pieces that will help you when you are ready to win.? Cashen did it by turning Mazilli into Darling and Terrell and subsequently turning Terrell Into Howard Johnson and Bob Bailor and Carlos Diaz into El Sid. Hopefully, Sandy can pull off his own version of the Hernandez trade. Then, when you're close enough to win, you use the strength of your farm system to obtain that final piece that puts you over ala the Gary Carter trade.
I disagree in regards to Niese and Dickey. There is no reason they shouldn't stick around to fill out the back of the rotation. They're more than good enough and if one of Familia, Wheeler, Mejia winds up in the bullpen (which there is a very good chance) then we'll need a #4 and a #5. Niese, Dickey. There ya go.
I have no doubt about Niese. Dickey, if he continues his excellence, sign him up but only if he'll keep taking two year deals.
