Frank Gray - The Mayans Are Right, But for the Wrong Reason

It's officially 2012. This is supposed to be the year of the Apocalypse. According to ancient Mayan calenders, December 21, 2012 is the last day of the world. So do they know something we don't?

Perhaps there's a gigantic meteor hurling in space on a trajectory toward Earth that scientists haven't picked up on yet. Perhaps the Earth itself is preparing for a massive volcanic eruption from its' underground super volcanoes. Time will tell.

As far as the baseball world, it already looks bleak for the New York Mets. Baseball prophets point to the financial upheaval and loss of star power in Queens as a reason to believe the end is nigh at Citi Field. What if those prophets are wrong? What if the Mets field a decent team this year?

It's plausible to believe they could get Johan Santana back  healthy and effective. It's also possible to see the young hitters step into their roles as starters and embrace the major league stage admirably. It is also feasible to realize that the Mets bullpen could be immensely better this year and successfully close out games for the starting staff.

With the fences moving in slightly, it is acceptable to believe that Jason Bay and David Wright will see the benefits in their power numbers.  The Mets have a good starting rotation returning in Dickey, Pelfrey, Niese and Gee.

If they add another pitcher until Santana comes back, it may be enough to contend in the division into September. They could make a run at a wild card. IF all the stars align and the moon and planets orbit in harmony, the Mets could make the playoffs.

There are way too many "ifs" to imply or argue at this point, suffice it to say that it is a possibility, an outside one or not. With that said, perhaps the Mayans were right after all. Imagine the impact of the Mets with their woes and drama making a meaningful playoff push.

It would nearly destroy the baseball world to fathom that. Maybe the Mayans weren't talking about Earth in their prophecies. Maybe they were just Mets fans.
