Legends Blank Gnats 4-0
Savannah, GA – The Lexington Legends snapped the Savannah Sand Gnats’ four-game winning streak with a 4-0 win Wednesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats’ lead for first place in the Southern Division over the Charleston RiverDogs, who were postponed by rain in Charleston, shrank to one half game with the loss.
The Legends (31-28) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning. SS Raul Mondesi singled sharply into centerfield off Savannah starter Robert Gsellman to score 2B Kenny Diekroger.
Lexington tacked on two more runs in the sixth on a two-run double by 3B Michael Antonio. Gsellman then induced a pop-up and two strikeouts to finish the sixth inning, but was charged with the loss for allowing three runs on nine hits.
Lexington starter Alec Mills, making his second start of the year after 15 appearances in the bullpen, was excellent, holding the Gnats off the scoreboard for seven innings while striking out seven without issuing a walk to earn his second win of the year.
A single run in the seventh on an RBI single by former first-round-pick CF Bubba Starling off reliever Tyler Vanderheiden completed the game’s scoring at 4-0.
The Gnats (35-23) had seven hits and at least one base runner in five of the game’s nine innings but were just 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
The Gnats will send RHP Matt Koch (3-2, 4.91) to the mound Thursday against RHP Bryan Brickhouse (4-3, 2.25). Gates at Historic Grayson Stadium open at 6 pm. The radio pregame show begins on News/Talk 630 and online at sandgnats.com at 6:45 pm.
