Mack Ade - Draft Observation – Day 1

#11 – 1B - Dominic Smith – Serra (CA) HS

Veteran Mack’s Mets readers know how unhappy I have been with Alderson and Company’s approach to building a playoff team in New York City. I’ve never been a big fan of drafting a high school player with a first round pick, especially a pick as early as Brandon Nimmo and Gavin Cecchini’s were. Now, we have the 11th pick in the draft, and, low and behold, college blue chippers like D.J. Peterson, Ryne Stanek,, and Braden Shipley are still on the board. Braden Shipley! This is a guy that projects to play in The Bigs in late 2014/opening day 2015. You could have the last piece of your “magic rotation” and guys like Noah Syndergaard would be the odd man out. You could then trade him, or trade Jon Niese, or pretty much do whatever you want to get the bats you need… in the next 18 months.

So, what does Sandy and Company do?

They draft a pure first baseman out of high school with a 5-year projection.

There is some good news here. First, I interviewed him a year ago and he’s a great kid. He also may be the highest projectable bat in the draft. He also plays an excellent defensive game. I can see him starting off in Brooklyn, especially since the organization is currently weak behind Jayce Boyd in minor league first basemen (BTW, how the hell happy can Boyd be tonight?).

In my world, the Mets now have three first round picks, two of which will play 2013 for a short-season team, and the other playing A-ball. Please don’t ask me to list all the players they could have drafted that are either in AA, AAA, or already in the majors.

Smith has a ton of ceiling and projectable talent… for 2018.

I’ll let Soto figure out where he ranks Mets prospect wise.

Err...

I found one report on him which I posted on another post.

I also understand he didn't play much this season because he was benched by his coach after a 'dispute'.

OF Austin Wilson and RHP Bobby Wahl were still on the board.

My wife walked by tonight and said, 'why don't you find another team to root for'? I asked her why she said that and she said 'well, they obviously aren't operating the way you would'.

See, she remembers me for the 20+ years I ran businesses and corporations.

She's right. Sandy and Company and I are just not playing the same game. I'm trying to make the playoffs and they're still playing that Moneyball bullshit. Two years ago they drafted someone from a school that didn't have a baseball team. This school had a team, but wouldn't let this player play.

Sandy and Company wants to re-invent the wheel.

I just want to put the wheel on the cart.

We'll see how today goes.

Hope Dom opens in Brooklyn because I like going to games. But judging from past early round HS players I doubt it.

I'm going to the movies today.

There's no rush to put this shit up. I'll get it done by the end of the day.

So we heard about Church's off the field issues, but our 3rd round pick Casey Meisner was suspended from his teams playoff games.

http://www.yourhoustonnews.com/cypresscreek/sports/baseball-cy-woods-meisner-playing-waiting-game-as-mlb-draft/article_73f9a03e-cedd-11e2-b94f-0019bb2963f4.html

Meisner dealt with some adversity leading up to the draft as well. He was suspended from school and in turn the playoffs for skipping class – something Meisner said was a bad decision on his part.

He said not being able to pitch in the playoffs was tough to cope with, but he used it as a learning experience.
“It killed me in the beginning,” he said. “I sent out a text to every person on the team. I said ‘It’s very disappointing. I know you’re going to need me in the playoffs but I made a mistake. It hurts me to see I can’t be with my team.’ I pitched all year just to be in the playoffs. That’s the goal is to win state. I had all of my friends and family there saying ‘You can’t do anything about it. You have to move on to the next step. You’ve got the draft coming up in a couple of weeks. Work out, work harder, get better, just fly right and do everything well and look forward to the next day and don’t dread on it.’
“In the end, I couldn’t do anything about it. I’ll make every decision a good decision, I’ll tell you that.”

I guess the new market inefficiency is players with off-field issues.
