Mets Draft Target - LHP - Marco Gonzalez
This is the kind of guy that you hope is still around at #48. The Mets could use a big time lefty and Marco Gonzalez looks like the real thigs.
As we've mentioned before, one of the strengths of the 2013 MLB draft class is college pitching, particularly left-handed college pitching. Sean Manaea of Indiana State, Kevin Ziomek of Vanderbilt, Tom Windle of Minnesota, Dillon Overton of Oklahoma, and Kent Emanuel of North Carolina all look like potential first round picks. Another southpaw arm to watch carefully is Gonzaga's Marco Gonzales, seen as the second-best of the group (behind Manaea) by many experts. Let's take a look. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2013/2/19/4006796/2013-mlb-draft-marco-gonzales-lhp-gonzaga-scouting-report
Gonzales is listed at 6'1", 185 lbs in the Gonzaga website. In his sophomore year last year, he put up a line of 8-2, 1.55, 92.2 IP, 23 BB, 92 K's. Gonzales doesn't have great velocity. He FB tops out at 92 MPH, but as you can see from the stat line, he has great command. He can cut the fastball and has a slider as well as a plus changeup to go with it that is his best pitch. He led Baseball USA to a bronze medal in the summer of 2012. He also made two appearances in the Cape Cod League with a record of 1-0, 0.00, 10 IP, 0 BB, 13 K's. Marco Gonzales would be a solid pick at #26 with a relatively low ceiling but a high probability of reaching it http://whenthegiantscometotown.blogspot.com/2013/01/scouting-draft-marco-gonzalez.html
Marco Gonzales is one of the most interesting pitchers in this draft. His stock is incredibly high, to the point where he will likely end up going in the first round, but he does it in a way that usually gives evaluators some pause. Working with a fringe-average fastball from the left side, usually in the 86-89 mph range, Gonzales is not going to blow opposing hitters away. But he has such a good off-speed repertoire, with a plus changeup, above-average curveball, as well as a cutter, above-average command of everything and a great feel for pitching that the Gonzaga ace can get away with less velocity on his heater. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1600761-ranking-the-10-fastest-rising-2013-mlb-draft-prospects#/articles/1600761-ranking-the-10-fastest-rising-2013-mlb-draft-prospects/page/3
Mack - the bottom line here is, if the Mets go college bat #11, and Gonzalez is still around at #48, you can't go wrong with this pick.
