After a 53 minute rain delay, the Savannah Sand Gnats defeated the Rome Braves 6-4 in game one of a four game series with a crowd of 2,409 in attendance.
The Sand Gnats struck first when Maiki De La Cruz received a lead off walk and later scored off a throwing error for the 1-0 score. Savannah made it a 5-0 lead in the second posting four runs on five hits. Maiki De La Cruz had a two RBI triple followed by another run scoring triple by Brandon Nimmo. Jayce Boyd added a RBI single.
Rome made it a 5-3 game in the third inning when Eric Garcia (2) cracked a two run homer and Trenton Moses added a two run double. Savannah added a run in the fifth and the Braves a run in the ninth to close out the scoring for the 6-4 final.
Matt Koch (4-2) gets the victory for Savannah. Braves starter Mauricio Cabrera (1-4) was roughed up going four innings allowing six runs on eight hits. Brett Mitchell (10) earns his tenth save of the season. The Rome Braves bullpen pitched well, going five innings not allowing a hit while striking out ten hitters. In all, Braves pitching struck out seventeen Savannah batters in a losing cause.
