Savannah 9 - Asheville 2

The Savannah Sand Gnats swarmed the Asheville Tourists for a 9-2 win Wednesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium to take two of three games from Asheville. The Gnats' win combined with the Charleston RiverDogs' victory in Greenville keeps the Savannah one game in front of Charleston for first place and with four games to play in the first half for the Gnats and five for the RiverDogs.
The Gnats (39-26) broke a 2-2 tie with a four-run fourth inning. DH Eudy Pina began the uprising by tripling into the leftfield corner. Pina scored on 3B Cole Frenzel's single up the middle into centerfield. Savannah then used a fielder's choice and a SS Philip Evans' single to load the bases. RF Maikis De La Cruz uncleared the bases with another triple into the leftfield corner to put the Gnats in front 6-2.
On the hill, Savannah starter Matt Koch retired the first nine Tourists in a row. Asheville (34-30) got to him for two runs in the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2. Savannah CF Brandon Nimmo kept the game tied by throwing out C Tom Murphy at the plate for the inning's second out. Koch finished six innings, striking out a season-high 11 batters without issuing a walk to earn his fifth win of 2013.
The Gnats completed the game's scoring with three runs in the seventh inning, keyed by a two-run double from 3B Cole Frenzel. Frenzel finished 3-for-5 with 3 RBI.
The Gnats will send RHP Jake Kuebler (1-2, 2.86) to the hill Thursday in the first game of the final series of the first half against the Greenville Drive. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. Gates at Historic Grayson Stadium open at 6 pm. The radio pregame show begins on News/Talk 630 and online at sandgnats.com at 6:45 pm.
