The Savannah Sand Gnats rode a six-run sixth inning to a 9-2 victory over the Lexington Legends Tuesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats have won four in a row, and snapped the Legends' four-game winning streak.
Trailing 2-0 entering the second inning, the Gnats (35-22) used five singles and two walks to take a 6-2 advantage. 3B Jeff Reynolds evened the game at 2-2 with a bases-loaded single up the middle. DH Maikis De La Cruz put the Gnats in front with a bases-loaded walk. CF Brandon Nimmo followed with a lined-single to left to add a fourth run in the inning. 1B Jayce Boyd drew a second walk in the inning to force home a run and C Kevin Plawecki capped the inning's scoring with a sacrifice fly to right.
The Gnats added a run in the sixth on Nimmo's second RBI single of the game to make the score 7-2. Nimmo finished 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBI.
Two more runs in the seventh, highlighted by Stefan Sabol's solo homer, his fifth of the year, made it 9-2.
The Legends (30-28) scored their only two runs of the game in the top of the first against Savannah starter Logan Taylor, who was making his first start since April 21 in his return from a strained oblique. Taylor, who was on a limited pitch count, lasted 3.2 innings with one walk and five strikeouts.
The Savannah bullpen combined to give the team 5.1 innings of scoreless relief with three hits, no walks and five strikeouts. Marcos Camarena earned the win for his 1.1 innings of work.
The Gnats send RHP Robert Gsellman (2-2, 3.52) to the mound Wednesday against Lexington RHP Alex Mills (1-2, 1.59). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. Gates to Historic Grayson Stadium open at 6 pm and the radio pregame begins on News/Talk 630 and online at sandgnats.com at 6:45.
