The Braves and Sand Gnats split a doubleheader Saturday evening before a crowd of 3,696 at State Mutual Stadium.
The bats for both teams were quite in the first game until Brandon Nimmo started the fourth inning off with a single followed by a Kevin Plawecki walk and a three run homer by Stefan Sabol (6) for the 3-0 score. The Braves answered in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly by Carlos Franco allowing Josh Elander to score after he singled making it a 3-1 game. The Sand Gnats added an insurance run in the sixth and held on for the 4-1 win. Savannah's Jake Kuebler (1-2) received his first win of the season while Rome's Frank Lafreniere (3-4) gets the loss. Paul Sewald (2) gets the save.
The second game was a different story for Rome. The Braves got an early lead in the first when Eric Garcia drew a lead off walk and Trenton Moses (2) cranked a homerun to put two on the board. The Braves went on to score another run in the fifth after a lead off triple by Felix Marte and a RBI single off the bat of Eric Garcia and Rome went on to win the game 3-0. Wes Parsons (2-2) pitched six innings allowing only three hits earning his second win and Shae Simmons (17) received the save. The Sand Gnats starter Steven Matz (2-3) got the loss.
