May 17th 2014 -- Mets 5, Nationals 2

Saturday evening in Washington, Bartolo Colon pitched 8 solid innings and Juan Lagares put on a one man show as the Mets snap their 3 game slide with a 5-2 win over the Nats. As the Mets have done  consistently this year they jumped out to a an early lead in the first inning scoring three times on a 2 run single by Eric Campbell and an RBI single by Lagares.  In the 3rd Lagares made it 5-0 with a 2 run homer (2). In the 4th, the Nationals got their only 2 runs when Ian Desmond hit a two run homer (6) off Colon to make it 5-2. Colon went 8, he allowed 5 hits, both runs, earned, he walked 1 and struck out 5 and retired the last 11 batters he faced. Gio Gonzalez started for the Nats and got hit hard for the 2nd straight outing lasting only 3 innings falling to 3-4.  Lagares made a pair of great catches in center, the one for the highlight  reel came in the 5th then Lagares ran back to the base of the wall in center leapt and took away a homer from Jayson Werth.  Wilmer Flores started at short and went 1 for 3 and looked solid in the field as well.  Daniel Murphy, Campbell and Lagares each had 2 hits apiece to pace the offense. Jerry Mejia got his first career save on the year pitching a scoreless 9th.  The win snaps a 9 game losing streak against the Nationals. The Mets now stand at 20-22 on the year and 11-10 on the road. Sunday is the rubber game of the series.  Jordan Zimmerman (2-1  3.59) goes for the Nats, Zach Wheeler (1-3  4.53) goes for the Mets.

This just in: Mets to sit Lagares for the next week, to work on "improving from going 2-4 to going 4-4......also needs to work on strengthening his calves, because he barely got high enough to rob Werth of that homer"-----Terry Collins

Hilarious. Maybe TC is a genius, sat him jussst enough to for Lageras to come out and put an exclamation point that is going to ensure him playing 6 games a week no questions asked.

My trio...Lagares, Campbell, Flores...with then in the lineup, WE CANNOT POSSIBLY BE BEAT! If Terry sits any of the 3 tomorrow, well...then he's just being Terry. Playing Campbell will keep them out of the "most Ks by a team - season" record books. Play Eric!!! Play Wilmer. And of course play Juan Lagares Clemente.

Couldn't ask for a better outcome than this...

Colon builds his trade value..Mejia looks like a closer..Lagares shits in Terrys cereal..Flores looked ok on D..

That beings said...Flores will be back on the pine tomorrow, and if Lagares goes 0-4 he'll be back on the bench too.

I'll jump on the Plawecki train with you, Ernest....419 in May....why not. I know, prudent thing is to get him more ABs in minors, but he can hit. Period. And does not strike out. Have him, Campbell and Flores in a lot of the at bats at C, 1B, and SS, and contact and hits will go up, Ks will go down.
