If you're looking for something's to be excited about on the lower levels of the system, the Savannah bullpen, specifically Robert Coles, Dario Alvarez and Akeel Morris have been outstanding to start the season. Obviously it's early, but combined, they've pitched 42 2/3 innings and haven't been scored upon yet. Certainly that helps getting the team to 10 games over .500 this early in the season, with a team batting average A little wild at times, but 63K/18BB's is still roughly 3.5/1 ratio and a combined WHIP under 1.00 ( didnt feel like doing math this early on a Saturday). Throw in Darwin Frias, who's been pitching real well as well with a 2.93 ERA and a 20K/5BB line, as well as Tyler Vandenheiden coming in from Extended ST & John Mincone who's been a solid arm since we drafted him and this is a lights out bullpen so far for the Sand Gnats.
Mack, we don't get to see these guys obviously, but any reports on what these guys are throwing down there? Is this just a hot start or are they for real? We know the starting arms are legit (Whalen, Flexan, Gsellman, Diaz, Gant, Knapp), but would you agree that these guys are certainly making names for themselves so far? The keep this up and they might earn a cool bullpen nickname a la "Nasty Boys" of the early 90's Reds pen! How about, "The Nasty Gnats"?? Haha
Hit publish by accident, but was getting to the part where the team batting average is near the .240 mark, so it's mostly pitching that is carrying this team.
It is heartening to see those relievers cookin'. However, get 'em up a few rungs and see. Over last few years, they've had some great Savannah relievers...none in majors but Edgin, and we see whatks going on there.
