The Future New York Mets Pen

New York Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson was yakking with ESPN Friday and said that the Mets are considering reassign Rafael Montero (4.31) and Jacob deGrom (1.89) to the Las Vegas bullpen, as a possible first step to being reassigned to Queens in the same capacity.

“I think we’re at a point that anything is possible,” said Alderson.

General Managers don’t say these kind of things unless they are about to happen.

Montero has had a good season so far in the Pacific Coast League, but deGrom has been the ace of the staff. No one has earned a promotion more than him.

At the same time, only Bartolo Colon and Zack Wheeler have skipped a beat in Queens as starters, but it’s far too early to overreact and remove them from their slot. No, getting Montero and deGrom on the 25-man as 2014 relievers makes all the sense in the world.

My guess is Jose Valverde would be the first casualty and either Gonzalez German or Jeurys Familia would be the second. Maybe Torres. The point is your talent on the far could easily be better than what yoy are putting out every day and it's time to start finding out.

There won't be any big mistakes here... everybody has options.

The important thing is that it’s time to continue the conversion of this pitcher-based team to the exciting, young arms who deserve their day in the sun.

Remember... the team still needs to make room for the eventual return of Vic Black (0.00) and the promotion of recently acquired Zack Thornton (1.29).

Did we make an offer to Hanrahan? I didn't hear anything. If we didn't that was very dum. We could definitely use his stuff in our bullpen

I don't believe the Mets did.

Hey Mack...Carreno - is he AAAA or another legit arm in waiting?

Carreno, like so many others, probably will fall short due to the math.

The Mets currently operate with a 7 man pen... that's WITHOUT Montero, deGrom, Black, Parnell, and Thornton.

There are so many decent relief pitchers that simply never make the grade here because teams convert some of their starters to the pen. The Mets may wind up doing this still with guys like Verrett and Gorski.

My guess is he has no chance of being called up to Queens this year. Past that also looks grim because of the math.

(you can't blame the Mets for going with the experienced old guys... they are seasoned major league pitchers who have had what it takes to make it at this level)

Hanrahan has signed (Detroit, I think). In any case, he can't start pitching in real games (minors) until at least June, by which time we should already have promoted from within. Who knows if he'll even be ML-ready by September?
